Sorry they're all jumbled. Pics are from CLS 550, ML63, two SL65's, C63, and E350 wagon. I left out some of the less interesting and older stuff. But these are the kinds of things I see/work on/drive day to day.

Could I borrow your job for a little while? Like, forever?

Sure! As long as I still get to collect my usual paycheck.

I love the Affalterbach shifter knob on some AMG's. First saw one on a SL63 I was detailing weekly.
I know I probably spelled it wrong

actually I think you got it right. Those affalterbach logos are nice, I especially like the raised embossed style like on the sl65 seats.

Those aren't seats. Seats are for mortals.
They are thrones, fit for nothing less than an immortal mangodking.

Man, I need a job at a dealer where I'm in charge of moving/fixing this kind of stuff all day.

Welcome, to Oppo. I read your introduction (topless) the other day, but didn't respond. I Lurk mostly.
I am in the construction industry and your job ( mechanic or tech) fascinates me, because I rarely work on my own cars ( thank goodness they haven't needed it) and when I do I dread it until the job is completed and I feel really accomplished and awesome that I just saved myself a few hundred dollars here and there.
Couple questions for you.
How did you get to where you are now?
Where did you start?
How long have you been a tech?
Was the training mostly on the job or did you attend much if any college?
How much better is it at a premium dealership verses the other dealers (ford, Chrysler, chevy) and independent shops?
Is it worth it?

Man, this feels like an interview!
Hard work and never letting myself be content until I reached my next goal. My next goal is shop foreman or team lead if we go to a team format.
My dad's driveway.
I've been a tech professionally for 8 years, but I think 2 of those were doing body/street rods/restorations.
Spent a year at WyoTech doing automotive with chassis fabrication, high performance engines, street rod and custom fabrication classes. On the job training never ends. They are sending me to at least three classes this summer. That doesn't even include online and in-store classes. My work transcript is longer than my entire high school transcript.
What is better is completely dependent on each individual situation. Independents are a bit of a dead end, but are usually very laid back and offer excellent variety. They also require you to be very creative. The only other brand I've ever worked worked for in a dealer setting was Infiniti. And that was stupid. not because of the cars or brand, but because management didn't care about the service department and often made decisions that were morally questionable at best. But I have heard that premium brands treat their employees better.
For me, it is worth it. I had an aptitude for drafting/design, engineering, politics/law. But I chose this because it is what I did in my free time and couldn't tolerate sitting at a desk for more than a few hours every day. My only regret is that for the amount of work technicians do, compensation is low compared to some other occupations. For instance, doctors only have one make and two models to learn! It isn't worth it for everyone though, I've seen a lot of people come and go, thinking it would be easy and they would make a ton of money. That just isn't the case.

I know! So disappointing! But the autos shift so fast!

Thanks for the response. Maybe the FP will have a "Ask a AMG Tech Anything" over there, hah.
I'm already pretty set in my ways at 33, and have settled in at a job that's kind of a dead end, but pay is alright for only a high school education.
Thanks for the photos too, kinda neat to see that even expensive cars need work too, and are just machines.
Keep up the good work.

I know, and I love the power they have and so much else about them. When I finally have to yield to my daily having a stick I'm sure I'll be looking at the MB dealership.

What exactly do you do?

I'm a tech. Check out my previous post.I fix 'em. Most of these are new cars and don't need real work, but I do most of the Pre-Delivery Inspections on AMG's since the only other person who can is the shop foreman. The wagon is a certified pre-owned, so mostly just maintenance on that one.
