Learning to drive stick may save your life if you cross the tracks in a manual.

Usually I hate it when they say a car "stalled" on the tracks, but this time it appears to be correct.

Yeah, agreed. Several parts of this story don't make sense. A girl buys a manual Infiniti... and doesn't know how to drive stick?

Possibly being in the process of learning to drive stick will *kill* you, and *knowing* how will save you.

Honestly, I'd say majority of the now-manual-drivers I know bought a manual car before they knew how to drive one.

Thinking about it, operating a train on a stretch of tracks with railroad crossings must be just about the most stressful thing in the world, having to sit in constant preparedness for "that one guy (or in this case girl)"

I definitely did. However, mine was a $500 Ford Focus that had already been hit a few times. Would not have gotten a new manual car without a beater to learn on first.

Ah, I see what you're saying, though I've known a few of those as well. I have a female friend who bought herself a new V6 Mustang and learned on that.

Wowza, I'm pretty sure this was one of my fears as I was learning to drive manual.

Definitely. How do you stay that alert doing something so boring, but have lightning-fast reflexes as soon as you see that car on the tracks around the corner. It also looks like she tried to run the crossing after the gates started to fall, probably leading to a more hurried shift and increasing the chance of error. Then... she must have hit the brakes or something...

I'm not sure it ever crossed my mind, to be honest. But I am already careful around train tracks in general. I was way more afraid of rolling back downhill into a new Mercedes who had pulled up inches away from my bumper...

I ordered my car before learning how to drive stick. Learned on my car once I picked it up.
