Hello all,
I'm planning on repainting my hood this weekend and was wondering if anyone has experience with 2k clear coat. For those that don't know this is a 2 part urethane clear coat that comes in an aerosol can. You simply mix the 2 chambers and you have a high quality 2 part clear coat that lasts 48 hours in the can.
My question is regarding application over rustoleum rattle can which I will be using for the base coat. The rustoleum can says either clear within 1 hour of painting or wait 48 hours. My question is can I really clear coat it within one hour of applying the base coat?
Also I will be doing a complicated 3 tone paint job, should I sand before applying clear? I wasn't planing on it as I was worried the colors would run together when wet sanding.
Thanks!

That is the window. You need to hit it early otherwise you have to wait 48 hours because the solvents in the clear can reactivate the paint and cause weirdness. Do the color first, then clear, clear, clear, then wet sand and polish. I would sand the primer prior to color, but I have not sanded color before. But that really doesn't mean that it can't be done.

I'm just worried about whether the 2k clear will play nice with the rustoleum before its completely set up.

If its urethane it should be fine. If its enamel, I would let it set up. You can buy rattle can clear for a lot cheaper than the 2K stuff that will play nice.

Yeah I know. I wanted something that was a little tougher as the hood gets a lot of UV exposure. the extra 15 bucks seems worth it in the long run.
