So I'm going to Canada. I pulled out my Garmin last night to pre-set the hotels we'll be staying at and the damn thing wouldn't pull up Canada. Did some digging and it turns out my device doesn't come with Canadian maps. Oh well. I'll just get the map... map of Canada costs $60? WTF?

Time to call Verizon and see how much it costs to get some data for international use. $25 for 100mb? Hrm that's a rip off, but that doesn't sound so bad. How much data does a phone use as a GPS? 500mb in 10 minutes you say? $20.48 per 1mb over 100mb you say? $59,417.00 for the first hour you say? F U I say. $60 for a map on a Garmin sounds reasonable now I say.

Some people have said I can use google maps without using data and it'll give turn by turn directions. I'm wondering how that works. I'm going to ask a very stupid question but how can it determine the speed of the car and know when you approach a turn... or does it just give you map quest style turn by turn directions and if you make a wrong turn you're screwed?

I think my parents have a GPS i can use with Canada maps, but still I'm looking for a single figure solution (ie less than $10) rather than a 5 figure an hour solution.

Traveling internationally is expensive. I once used some Verizon data in Canada and got massively screwed for it. If you can download all the appropriate Google Maps via wifi, it will still function as a GPS giving you turn-by-turn.

the gps has a map of the roads in its memory banks, and it uses your GPS location via the gps signals to triangulate wherever you are in reference to the points it has saved in memory. As for a cheap map ive no idea.

But how does it know when I'm approaching a turn if there's no satellite feeding data to it?

GPS is not the same as data. GPS is independent of mobile data.

You could always get a Canadian SIM for your phone and get a monthly plan through one of their carriers.

If you had a Windows Phone, you could just fire up Here Maps and download the entirety of Canada for free

I am not understanding. My fear is that I won't be able to lock out the 4G network and I'll end up using data.

Not worth the hassle for a 4 day weekend. Not when I want the sim at 8:30am Friday morning. Plus doesn't my phone need to be unlocked for that to work?

Which phone do you have? You should be able to put it in airplane mode and still possibly turn on GPS, ensuring it won't connect to anything except GPS (which feeds your location to your phone for free, no cellular data involved. It just passes coordinates, which your downloaded maps then use to place you on a map).

Usually if I'm not driving all over town, I will just print out a turn-by-turn at the hotel...

If you have an internationally enabled phone, you can do it. It doesn't have to be unlocked to work.

I was down in Deal's Gap a few years ago, since it pre-loads the route when you have a data signal it worked fine once I lost data signal. When I was in an area without a data signal, instead of it saying "Turn right Main St" it just says "Turn Right".

I would also suggest looking at the turn by turn directions and taking a screen shot of them as it may help to know the streets you're supposed to turn onto.

If it's an iphone - under settings -> cellular you can shut off cellular data. Other phones probably have the same thing somewhere.

That I can do. Airplane mode. I'll test it tonight. Galaxy S4.

If you use Google Maps, you should be able to download the map for the region of Canada you're visiting, then turn off your phone's mobile data antenna (in Settings > Data Usage on Android). The phone will then rely on it's GPS antenna for calculating its location.

OK cool, I can help you then. As long as it isn't an iPhone or some Amazon product. I have an S3. Turn on airplane mode, then turn GPS on. You know how to download google maps and have the free space to do it?

I have a 16gb phone with nothing downloaded other than a few apps like Netflix and the ESPN and Yahoo fantasy baseball apps. Oh and the twitter app. Nothing else really on it. So yeah I'll have the free space. I have no idea how to use the google maps though. I would assume i can figure it out, but I've never tried.

I do have to say - that's one reason I love my Lumia 920 (and why I went for it over a much cheaper Lumia 520). I've got maps for a good chunk of the world downloaded.
