The Duesenberg Model J and the Ford GT40. Perhaps the greatest cars ever made from America. Which one would you drive home?

From a financial standpoint: the most valuable one.

I think from a gearhead standpoint, the GT40.

GT40. Prewar era cars are boring to me for some reason. I just picture stuffy boring very old car collectors whenever I see one.

I have key chain, mouse pad, desktop pad (from Ford dealership), clock, posters, thermometer, 1:12 scale toy, and about 60 1:64 scale ones. My "fun" room is fun. I do like that coffee mug..........thanks!

I love the Ford GT40 with all my heart, but I have a thing for Duesenbergs. So I'd take the Model J.

after extremely little thinking and an extremely short period of time spent on it GT40 because gulf colors are awesome and it's gorgeous and it has a 7liter v8 and it broke 200 miles per hour first and it beat ferrari at their own game and dear lord I think I just had a crisis (top gear joke)

Model J for sure! All of the presence (if not more) of a GT40 plus not being "slow" in the least and much more comfortable to drive around town make it the winner. Though there is a large part of me that wants to be obnoxious and drive the GT40 around town.

I feel like you can be just as obnoxious in a Duesy. It just screams "move over poor person."

You think the GT40 was from America? The engine was and the MkIV which won Le Mans in 1967. Not the other models though.

Just that the English couldn't build the damn thing to win and Shelby had to take over the entire project and won with the car two times in consecutive years. But sure it wasn't American in any way.

Not American in many ways, no. The only model to be actually built there was the MkIV which only won twice, once being at Le Mans in '67 which remains nearly half a century on the only "All American" victory.

The road going ones were mainly from Wyer in the UK and are of course usually rhd. I saw a gathering of a dozen or so of these at Le Mans in 1997. Can't imagine what they'd be worth now. On a trivia note, they get so hot inside that everyone had to open the doors as soon as they even slowed down.

Thats the beauty of classic motoring I suppose with regards to the overheating in the cabin. Regardless the GT40 would not have been successful if not for Holman and Moody and Carroll Shelby. Under Wyer the cars had a dismal racing history, unreliability was the key issue.

True, but I'm thinking more in the noise sector of obnoxious.

The Duesy. So magnificent! Of course the GT40 is also magnificent; what it isn't in any way imaginable is a road car. You could drive it onto a transporter, and you could drive it around a race track if you're a good enough driver - I'm not - but it would only be stupid abuse to both driver and car to drive it home. So the Duesy wins by default, where it could also win by pure merit.

You make an interesting point the Model J is a far more livable car and way more accessible to the average enthusiast
