So recently and sadly I blew the motor on my 2004 v6 3.9 Mustang, and it is pretty much pointless to get it remachined and everything, and I can't find any 3.9 motors for sale out of a mustang just because they only made them for like 6 months with it in. My question is though can I just swap in an earlier 3.8, and will the engine computer be the same?
Thanks and goodnight

Swap in a 5.0 crate motor and enjoy driving a Mustang with some balls for once. And in Cali at least, to swap in a different engine it has to be of the same year or newer to be emissions legal. '

I did a quick search on car-part.com and found plenty of 3.9s available.

I'm out of michigan so it shouldnt be a problem for me but as soon as it gets changed its going on for sale and the 5.0 wouldnt be worth the money I put into it, plus I'm a broke high school student

Uh it might work but the tuning isn't going to be 100% spot on.

And how did this happen? A friend of mine broke his v6 crankcase and the oil drained out and he didnt know until he stopped at a drugstore. Then he noticed, but nothing happend to his engine he just bought a new crankcase. Obviously from there on the car was towed.

For the cost of an engine swap, you could probably just find a new car. Easier said than done I know, but an engine swap won't be cheap.

They are externally identical and will interchange. They is a minor bore/stroke difference that was a platform-sharing tweak. A 3.8 will swap right in and be physically and functionally identical.
