He hit an oil slick, and his Jetta decided it liked the look of the guard rail in front of it. He is now having to pay $6,000 out of pocket to fix it, since he is on his parents insurance, and they don't want to use the insurance for it, since his mom was rear-ended in this same car 3 months ago.
Moral of story? pay attention to the road, and be safe!
(^not my friend's jetta, I just love GLI's)

I'm still confused to as why they made him pay 6 g's of his own money instead of using insurance.

this would jack up his insurance rates when he gets his own policy in 4 months (when he turns 18)

Still, like, that can't offset all that cash.

insurance companies are private businesses. they need to make money off of you. never ever will you come on the upside of an insurance company, and it will never hurt to pay out of pocket if you can!

But 6 thousand dollars!? Really? Will the insurance company raise the prices that much if this happens?

Hmmm I'm almost sure that it will be cheaper for him to stay on his parents' insurance after he turns 18... My dad's wonderful and pays my car's insurance - for the times I have a car - (don't worry, he's not paying a penny of my college costs) and I haven't even considered getting my own policy because I'm a 20 year old dude. Maybe when I turn 22 or so after college I'll consider my own but heck if it's cheaper, I'd rather be on my dad's policy (while I still can at least - is there an age limit...?) and pay him than be on my own policy and pay out the wazoo.
Also, similar situation happened with me a couple months ago...
I crashed my Miata into a tree but I didn't file a police report and my dad didn't file it with insurance. For one, I was completely at fault and there was no collision insurance on my car. Secondly, the car was worth <$2000. Not worth reporting to insurance and having our rates go up (probably a lot too). I parted some of it and am trying to get rid of the rest now that I'm back from school, just trying to get most of my money back :/

I'm so glad that my public insurance doesn't adjust rates for age.
I'd be screwed. 21 with a 260hp car that has a reputation for getting crashed.

No, it would jack up his parent's insurance, especially if it's already gone up because of the previous rear-ender AND it would affect his insurance once he got his own. My deal with my parents was always that if I caused their insurance to go up while driving their car, I just had to pay the difference from what it was to what it became (luckily that never happened). That would be WAY less than 6k.
