My car is killing me.

I'm trying to get the damn thing running right. I worked for a bit and finally decided to mess with the idle speed screw. It fixed my problem. My dad then says, let's tune it. Now the fucking car wont work again. The starter is also starting to hate me. I would take it to a proper mechanic for a proper tune up but I doubt there are people in town who can work on cars that old (without costing me a kidney). Fuck me, fuck Quadrajets, and fuck timing. Also, The car was leaking something that I couldn't recognize by smell or consistency so I tasted it. Battery acid. That stuff does not taste good.

What's going on? Q-jets are really basic. Pretty much - set idle and mixtures, adjust timing, re-adjust idle and mixture. That's the basics. What does "Won't work" mean? I'm suspecting a big vacuum leak.

One of two things will happen. It will start, run for a few seconds and then die. Or it will start, idle, and the moment I put the car in gear it will die.

If you can get it to idle consistently, lightly spray around the intake manifold and carb base with some carb cleaner. If you have a big leak, it will rev or stumble when you hit the spot. Disconnect and plug the brake booster line - if that makes a big difference, the booster diaphragm could be leaking.

Damn, None of this is sounding easy. Especially in the pockets, hope the budget goes well!

Also make sure all of the vacuum lines fit snugly. Vacuum leak on the line to the vacuum advance will drive you crazy!!!

Run some seafoam through it because why not?

Pick up a vacuum gauge for carb tuning, it makes it easier. A dial back timing light (if you don't have an MSD) is also pretty cool to have.

I'll check for leaks. Yeah, there's nobody in Indiana.

Oh I'm already way way over budget. Money for college is looking less and less likely. There's a life lesson in there somewhere.

Me too! Just sounds like the tune is out of whack at this point.

I've been tuning GM V8s for years and never had a use for a dial back light on a street car. Get it to idle right, then go for a few drives and listen for pings and adjust the springs and weights until it's right. I think it's more important to get the idle right unless it's a track only car. You will be much happier leaving the timing set for proper idle.

Ouch, Sorry about that man! Worst comes to worse, you can always postpone the build.

I've thought about it but I don't even know what my car is worth.

Not enough... but more than mine! I'm putting a crapload of bodywork and we are building a sick motor for my '73 LeSabre but in the end I'll have a $5000 car (if it's perfect) with a $5000 motor and the whole package will be worth about $3000. But I'm not doing it for the investment...

Fuel pressure, fuel pump?

I can tell! Ha ha.

Yeah, I don't want to throw a confound out there at him but I seem to remember the car having a factory HEI which might have the wrong timing curve. Won't change his current issues but might help in the future. I dunno.

Make sure your fuel level in the carb is set correctly, make sure you have adequate fuel pressure to the carb and try bumping your timing up a couple of degrees.

Did you rebuild the carb?

If not has it been sitting for a long time?
