So my sister came to town last night to split the distance between her place and an audition. She decided that we should head down to the beach really quick before we hit the bar. Fifteen minutes later, I come back to a smashed window, and her missing purse.
The good news is that thanks to some quick thinking we were able to recover her car keys right away (called the credit card company to see where they used her cards, told the gas station attendant to look in the trash), but most of the rest of the contents of her purse are missing but easily replaceable. The police officer responding was very helpful, and I think probably went above and beyond for something that's pretty much unsolvable. He even agreed to check the video feed from the gas station to see if they could get an ID on the douchebags. I worry a little about her missing DL, but she's gonna enroll in one of those credit/ID monitoring services in the meantime.
Meanwhile, I spent the better part of the morning vacuuming about a billion little shards of glass out of my beloved car (picture is related, but not my car). GOnna head down to safelite before 11 to see if they can wrap it and squeeze my car in today so I don't have to wait/commute another day.
Ugh. Such an inconvenience.

You can never clean all those glass cubes out of a car.

She shouldn't have left her purse in the car, everyone knows that!
That said, I've had my window smashed and my center console was ripped out, but nothing was taken. That's even worse!!!
But I recommend removing the passenger side door panel and cleaning out the glass that fell in there, as you'll hear it every time you shut that door.

TRUTH
My wife's car (a Chevy Volt) had the rear window spontaneously shatter. I was going to go down to the store to pick up a gallon of milk or something and when I shut the drivers side door, it sounded a lot different. I looked in the rear view to back up and the back window looked like the side window above.
I had to go in and break the news to my wife. She didn't take it well. But first, I had to clear a place in the garage to park her car, because it was raining. The normally-garaged Clown Shoe got to spend a few days outdoors so that the science car could stay out of the rain. We got out the shop vac and cleaned as much broken glass out of the car as we could. I think we did a pretty excellent job.
After it came back from the dealership (warranty, thank goodness) there were still remnants of the window around, now permanently entombed inside body panels, like the tailgate frame. Every now and then we can hear little pieces of glass rolling around in there.

In college someone busted my window and stole my CDs. Bastards. Even better, the doors were unlocked (theft was rampant so I figured I'd save the thieves trouble and leave the car open with nothing of value in there) and the CDs were burned. Three months of driving with a garbage bag taped on the window because I was classy.

I found out that you don't even need to clean them out of your race car to pass tech...

I'm gonna talk to the glass guys about it... or maybe I'll do it myself tonight.

Sorry to hear it! Hope the glass folks effect a quick and quality repair.
We had a similar rash of problems at trailheads here (super popular open space parks). The cops and rangers set up some very effective stings (leave a wallet on a seat, hide with a radio and binoculars up the hillside a bit and let the cops know who were waiting down around the corner. It was surprising how large a percentage of the break-ins were due to a relatively small number of thieves. Sounds like your beachfront areas could use a similar treatment.

I left a note in my previous car saying that I always leave the doors unlocked. There was never anything of value in there, so if they were going to break in I'd rather not lose a window over it.

I normally don't carry a bag around, but if I left my Marc Jacobs in my XJ, it'd raise the value of the thing by 25%. My doors don't even lock. I usually try to put something over it or throw it under a seat, but even parking on 8 Mile in Southfield, MI, I haven't had any issues when it slipped my mind and I left it sitting on the seat :/ shitty luck for OP and sister.

It's a common problem at this particular park. It was my first (and probably last) time going there, but there's one right down the road where there has never been a problem. The officer seemed to think that there might be enough video footage from the only bridge on and off the island, combined with the gas station footage to get an ID on the vehicle.
Of course, it's also possible he was just being nice telling us that.

I almost never lock my XJ either - my doors lock, it's the un-locking bit that gets tricky sometime. About the only thing in there to steal is maybe a water bottle and the USB stick in the fairly inexpensive stereo. Occasionally a homeless person/junkie will take the $1-2 in change out of the center console.
