I just realized this, but there are only a few truly boring compact cars you can buy today! By compact, I'm classifying cars in the size/price range of the ford focus (benchmark small car) The only truly boring ones I can think of are the Sentra and the Corolla! I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I'm just surprised how good the variety of cheap small cars has gotten since 2010.

have a cool compact car that we don't get in the states for your time!

In terms of sales, the Corolla is keeping the segment alive and well.

Shoot lower... I wouldn't consider the Focus to be of that level anymore.

Look at the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Spark, Hyundai Accel, Mazda 2, even the base model Fiesta. There's still plenty of boring out there.

I saw the picture and read the first bit and thought you were about to disparage the Renault Megane (of course I continued reading and was proven wrong).

My friend had her Renault Megane 1.5dCi i-Music for a couple of years and loved her to bits. Cheap, economical, responsive and generally a great all rounder.

Have a Renault Clio and a Megane as an apology.

Those are sub compact, not compact. Also, a Mazda 2 with a manual is not boring at all.

Nothing wrong with a base Fiesta, presuming the American base Fiesta comes with a manual.

I'm European, so it's always been a pretty interesting segment for me. With 'compacts' and 'subcompacts' - we've different names for them - having made up the largest segment of the market by a huge margin for decades, there's a lot of competition in the class between the various manufacturers, so we get a lot of interesting options. Personally, my favourite era in compact and subcompact design is probably the nineties.

I'm glad to hear America's finally getting in on the fun.

I'll bite - it's dirt cheap, looks kinda funky, and comes in colors you can't get away with on a German sedan because people get their big executive pens stuck up their butt when they buy one. It comes in a stick, is reasonably fun to thrash, and is dirt cheap and idiot proof to fix. This also mean it is dirt cheap and idiot-proof to modify. I'm sure sport suspensions and aftermarket exhausts will come out at some point. And it means you can decal one up to look like this, including the lowered suspension and wheels, for a totla cost well under 20 grand while getting 40+ mpg everywhere. The mirage is only boring if you make it boring.
