Can anyone explain the Ontario car buying process to me?

Kinja'd!!!

I'm looking to buy a pre-1970 beater for my daily/only car in Toronto because I am an automotive masochist. I've always lived in Texas and Alberta where smog testing and safety inspections didn't exist. I've owned 5 cars and never had one of them inspected.

As I understand it, pre-1988 vehicles are smog exempt in Ontario and it will have to pass a "safety inspection" to be registered. Any hidden difficulties I should know about for registering an old car here?

Thanks in advance!

PS Pic is of my Swift (staying in Alberta) with my dad's truck just because I like it

Oh my god this means my Suburban gets to stay! I can wipe the OBD2 codes myself and have it pass since it's a '99. Thanks!

Just keep in mind they check to see if the systems are "ready" when you do the test. If you just wipe the codes, all your systems will go into not-ready until they see everything is "ok". If your scan tool can check I/M ready for all the systems, if one is not ready when you go in, it'll be a fail. I got this on my 2000 Lexus just becasue I changed the battery the day before the test.

Question—why did you choose a pre-1970 beater? It would have been cheaper to buy something from 1990-2000 for about $600 (e.g. the Hyundai Accent, if you REALLY wanted a cheap, crappy car.)

pre-1987 cars are smog exempt and if I'm buying old I might as well get something with 60's cool

It's pretty smart, but I don't know if a pre-70's beater will be cheap.
