My brakes were squeaking really bad, like diesel truck bad, if not worse.
My dad said it's a layer of stuff on the new brakes that needs to be worn off. He tells me to ride the brakes as I drive around the neighborhood; so I did.
I get back, try to stop, and have to put the pedal to the floor for it to stop.
I get out and the brakes are smoking.
I think I'll be taking the truck to get dinner while those cool down...
THEY'RE STILL SQUEAKING TOO.

They're brand new! Not even a month old.

I changed brake pads and rotors a month ago, instruction were something like this:
Hard braking from 50mph to 10mph 5 times, without giving time for the brakes to cool down. Then from 35mph to 5mph 5 times again, after that a cooling period of at least 5 minutes driving at normal speed trying not to brake at all. according to the manual that's how you create a thin layer of materia on the rotor. lots of burning smell of course, but that's normal.

Have to try that. Because riding the brakes only helped a little.

New rotors too? If not, did you at least get them cut?
If the answer to both is NO, the squealing is because the rotors have pad material built up on them and the rotors needed to be resurfaced before you changed pads.
If so, it sounds like you didn't burnish the pads properly. I am unsure if you can do that after they've been used for a few weeks.

Well we only changed the rear drums because the front discs aren't but 3 years old. But the front discs are what is squeaking so maybe they're worn out.

Did you remember to grease the back of the pads?

Oh.
Then yeah. Pull a wheel and have a look. The calipers should have an inspection window. Also check your rotor surfaces.
Also, depending on your location there has been shitty humid/wet weather, and rotors flash rust quickly. That could be part of it?

It has sat in the street for the last 3 years; so it's had salt and snow and rain and heat and humidity attacking it.

oh. I missread it. Normally though when brakes squeak like that its a sign they need to be replaced. I've heard of having to bed in brakes, but normally they smell not squeak.
