Kinja'd!!!

This time of year is a little melancholy for me. Not only did I lose my Integra to thieves six years ago yesterday, I lost my beloved 1974 Karmann Ghia, the first car I ever bought, on June 1, 1996. What is it about springtime?

Well, last night, I learned that two of my good friends are selling their old Integras. One is an Aztec Green Pearl '92 GS-R with a mildly built B18C swap. Puts out something like 190 whp, or it did the last time it ran, which was two years ago. I'd always admired that car, and for years it was kept in pristine condition. But eventually, the ravages of time and other people took their toll on the car, and it's in depressing shape now. My friend just wants to start over with an S2000, and while I can't blame him, it's taking all the discipline I've got not to sell one of my guitars and buy it from him.

The other is also a 2nd-generation Integra, this one a '90 with a B17A swap and bolt-ons. This car belongs to a friend of mine who had been a Honda technician for years (he now works for Porsche), and he's got a garage full of goodies that never made it onto the car, including a B18C5 bottom end just waiting to be rebuilt with some CTR pistons. I tried to buy this car six years ago after my own Integra was stolen, but my friend wasn't ready to sell yet, despite never really driving it because he owns five other cars, all of which are nicer than the Integra.

And I have to say, it affects me a bit to think of these cars going to new homes. I don't like it, not one bit. Because the uncomfortable truth is that I've bonded more strongly with these cars than I do with most of the people who wander in and out of my life (close friends excepted, of course, but they don't wander in and out anyway).

My cousin and his girlfriend are about to have their first kid. Everyone in the family asks me how excited I am for them. I don't have the heart to tell them that it hasn't affected me yet. I'd be more excited if they were buying a new car.
