So apparently on everyone's gauge cluster, next to the gaspump icon is always an arrow pointing toward which side of your car the gascap is on, NEVER knew this! Pictures first is my car, after that some other random cars.
Edit: It's been established that this is not true, but feel free to share any other stories, but we've confirmed it's not true, lol.

I have to look at this every time I go to the gas station.

My MR2 has this, but I've driven cars that didn't. I know the 2009 M3 I drove didn't, and I don't think my girlfriend's 2008 Civic does either, if I recall correctly.

And if your car is single exhaust I'm pretty sure that's on the opposite side as the fuel door.

Of the many cars in my family's recent history, exactly one has this. It's not on all cars, and it's not even on all new cars.
Bored Snaurus and ford exploder? Yes.
Mistu lancer sportback and galant? No.
Saturns? No.
VW asspat? No.

*Usually
My E46 doesn't have an indicator, but considering the gas mileage I get I have become more than familiar with the location of my fuel filler door.

Well the one that says "Fuel Door" is pretty obvious LOL
But my BMW doesn't have an arrow.

If it doesn't have the arrow, I believe the side of the fuel icon with the pump indicates the side.

It's not on every car. For example, my '04 Sierra leaves you guessing (the cap's on the left).
It's a lot more common in later models, but I don't think it's universal.
I've also heard that the side that the gauge is on is on the same side as the gas door, which is obviously not necessarily true.

Haha, George Takei posted on Facebook that this was universally true for all cars, I found out it wasn't so as soon as I GIS'd it.

If you don't find it beside the gas gauge, you can find it under the speedo like in old camry's but what if I tell you I know a car that does not have that arrow? Volvo v70. Go check it out

Yeah, there are a number of them that don't have it, like '09 BMW's.

Well, with his voice, I'd be inclined to believe him, too.
I've also heard (false) claims that the cap is on the same side as the "Empty" side of the gauge, and that the little gas pump icon's hose points to the cap:

Haha, my gauge is a top-bottom type, so it could never point to either side of the car.

My e39 540i does not have such an arrow. I don't think older BMW's in general have them, since I don't think my father's Z3 or his E36 M3 have it.

You want another odd one? On Japanese cars the filler cap is usually on the opposite side from NA cars. This isn't always the case, but most of the time, if you bet on the right hand side in a Toyota or Honda you'd be right. My studies (Gas station attendant for a couple of years) helped me come up with this belief. An explanation would be that they usually put it on the same side as the driver. there are numerous examples of where this isn't true, but it is frequent enough that it is a likely scenario.Trucks and vans are always on the drivers side.
Also: I now know where you got your -screenname. Now to get into my full body, gimp suit... LANA!

I bet it's jhst changed over time so it's not so rigid anymore. I was talking late 80s. There were alot of malaise cars and Japanese was more likely to be from Japan than Ohio. At least they aren't behind the plates anymore...
