2011 Subaru Forester. My sister's been driving it for months until this week, she swapped cars with mom. I drove it a few times this week... and today, bam. No, it's not the fuel cap.

Dear Car Manufacturers,
This is very informative! Thanks!

hey subarus are infamous for that kind of thing

Subaru disables traction control and cruise control when CEL is on.

I'm with offroadkarter, headgasket lol Should we start a betting pool?
And do you have a code reader? I have one at home for these situations, a gift from my father, if not you know where to go! (I always chose Advance Auto before I had my own reader)
![]() 05/16/2014 at 13:46 |

Auto trajic.
![]() 05/16/2014 at 13:46 |

Get thee to a code reader. They really need to change the law so that it displays the information instead of the stupid CEL. What made sense in 1996 doesn't make sense today.
![]() 05/16/2014 at 13:48 |

That's kinda strange. Cruise control kinda makes sense, but not traction control.

so what
![]() 05/16/2014 at 13:49 |
|
I turn mine off whenever I can..aka, whenever I'm in a car that I can, both my cars don't even have T/C equipped :D
![]() 05/16/2014 at 13:49 |

Will do.

The only car in my house with it is the Vue, and it usually gets shut off when I drive. Both traction and stability control.

Well...if you must know....I wanted to annotate your picture and that was the only thing left worth annotating. Although I am wondering if the car actually doesn't have a temp guage.

Cost cutting? I don't know. It MSRP'd for $24k
![]() 05/16/2014 at 13:53 |

Yeah I made sure it's still there too!

My cars have neither :D base model 350Z has no t/c or VDC (vehicle dynamic control, fancy stuff from Nissan, lol) and a 65' Beetle..which is from 1965, so...obviously, the sound system is the only remotly smart thing in it, lol
![]() 05/16/2014 at 13:54 |

I see it's throwing a P26385 code here. Not sure what that is, possibly a VVT fault code.

Sad story, sorry friend. Our 09XT is holding up just fine for the time being at 76k miles
![]() 05/16/2014 at 13:56 |

Well...now I know how car fires happen I guess. I had always kinda wondered like "how would you not know your about to overheat". Lack of temperature guage would be one reason you wouldn't know.

Oddly enough it wouldn't be a headgasket issue, as the 2011 Forester has the new FB series engine.

my 2007 legacy 2.5 ate it's 1st head gasket at about 30k, second one lasted a little longer...eaten at 87k...and I now drive a Honda

I only saw that light 5 years ago after I took my car to the dealer, for the first (and only) warranty yearly check: they loaded a wrong software, and the car was shutting of at idle while on LPG. Four checks, nothing: trouble still there. One Saturday night on all night, to find the e-mails of the CEO of Chevrolet Italy and of the lady in charge with the relations with the press. One of my TERRIBLE e-mails to the dealer, c.c. to the CEO, the Chevy Media Relations Manager, all our consumer unions and (fake) to a Lawyer Firm. Monday morning the car was at the dealer's... tuesday evening it was back as new. Never went to that dealership again.

maybe its on because they didn't donate to enough charities and foundations?

Kidding aside, have you tried the MAF sensor or check out the air filter? a buddy of mine replaced his old air filter with a drop in K&N and the check engine light came on

No, I haven't yet. I'm planning on taking it to my Subie dealer next week.

Is it not under warranty? Seems new enough... You should ask one of those guys who sells cars on craigslist. They always know why CEL's are on, usually oxygen sensor.

Nice try, too many digits and 7-series faults are transmission related. Usually witha blown head gasket you would get for instance P0300 random misfire, P0304 #4 misfire, P0174 bank 2 lean.

Yea it's under warranty. I'm busy today but next week I'll take it to my Subie dealer.
