Time to try to sleep now. I turned on the A/C a little bit ago and it's now getting cold. I'm not an A/C hater like your family

I don't know jack about this car, but I always here it referred to as the worst of the breed. Except maybe the Cobra or Mach 1.

Pretty sure they came with fiberglass cracks from the factory.

Could you imagine what would happen if the current Corvette got uglier, slower, and less reliable every year for nearly 10 years in a row? Dropping to 1/2 the HP?

That would be like Chevy announcing a $60,000 Corvette today with 225HP, significantly uglier, and with more weight.

I view them as the right car for the right time. If it wasn't for their departure from the mould, I doubt the Mustang would be around today.

Each generation prior to the Mustang 2 got heavier and larger compared to the previous car, just like pretty much every other contemporary American car. Then, come the oil crisis and emissions regulations, they died out one-by-one.

Because the Mustang was able to move with the times (plus its phenomenal initial popularity), it survived.

That also allowed it to adapt to the times in each subsequent generation. The Fox was modern-looking during the '80s, the SN95 was jellymould during the '90s, the SN195 was retro-look in the '00s and the latest Mustang is high-tech sleek for the '10s.

Mostly 2 things. They were never great performers as the C4, and they were by far the ugliest generation of Corvette IMO.

It may not be the purist approach, but I would much rather a rebuilt C3 from its worst year updated to C5+ standard than any form of C4 (Unless its free, then free is free ;))

Late C3 (1972+) is uglier than the C4, but early (pre-1972) C3s are pretty good looking.

Kinja'd!!! AthomSfere > GhostZ

They got uglier, or at least less awesome... But I would take it over a C4 easy.

Kinja'd!!! GhostZ > AthomSfere
05/16/2014 at 14:01

Kinja'd!!!0

For me, I like the arches and curves of a C3, but the horrific interior (seriously, they're really, really hard to get in and out of and covered in weird foamy vinyl) combined with the sketchy handling (C4 was a transaxle with much better suspension, C3s are known to drag on the road as they get older because of the suspension sag) and the almost omnipresent cracks in the fiberglass on the C3, the C4 makes for a very enticing choice.

Kinja'd!!! AthomSfere > JayZAyEighty thinks C4+3=C7

Ultimately, that is all that matters I guess.

But between the C4 and the 3rd gen Camaro:

I am glad GM figured out how to make good looking cars again, much later in life.

I may be odd, but interiors rarely bother me. Unless they feel like they are held on mby tape and will fall of constantly.

And it sounds to me like a C3 is the less rational choice. But I say that like I expect any hobby to be rational!

This is so funny. I saw your post last night and commented right before going to bed. Then I had a dream that I met the BMW M engineers and they were mad about what I said. I told them that I wasn't disappointed in them, I was disappointed in the BMW board for not giving the M3/M4 a bespoke engine.

You know you're on Oppo too much when it impacts your dreams...

Yep They were a shift in the pony car market from back from HP to its roots of a fun smaller car. They were ok cars for the time. Compare them to the '70s smog era Fbodies if you want to see fail, heavy weight low hp and low low sales.

Kinja'd!!! BondoSpecial > GhostZ
05/16/2014 at 18:03

Kinja'd!!!0

Despite what all the owners of pre 1972 American cars would like you to think, the SAE gross hp figures used to rate pre 1972 vehicles were not a realistic reflection of vehicle performance. So Saying the (albeit still terrible) late 70s/early 80s TurdVette, which was rated in SAE net hp, was "1/2 the hp" of the pre 71 cars isn't really accurate.

Kinja'd!!! GhostZ > BondoSpecial
05/16/2014 at 20:43

Kinja'd!!!0

I know. But in terms of what people care about (HP numbers on paper) it was still disappointing for the consumer. In reality, they dropped by about 20-30%, mostly due to cheaper components ran at lower RPMs, lower octane fuel / compression ratio, and heavy (and outdated) emissions equipment.

I miss a N/A m3 but a BMW v8? They were always rare. BMW won't be making anything but v6 and Inline 6 turbos for the foreseeable future. I am fine with that, and maybe the v8 just remains a big saloon thing (m5, m6). They don't have a Black or AMG like mindset. They don't like to experiment. Sometimes thats good but sometimes its bad. They just need to keep making excellent chassis and RWD cars. I swear to god if they they make a FWD M-car I might cry.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > George Costanza
05/16/2014 at 21:22

If they make a FWD M car I'll never buy another bimmer again!

I think the S65 was a much better engine than the S54. I currently own both (2011 E90 M3 and 2004 E46 M3). The S65 wins in every conceivable way:

*Lighter

*Revs higher

*Moar power

*Better packaging - sits behind the front axle

I do like I6s. But I like V8s more. I would have loved for BMW to evolve the S65. It's not a giant heavy lump like the AMG 6.2. It's the best engine I've ever owned by a mile.

Kinja'd!!! George Costanza > Manuél Ferrari
05/17/2014 at 00:37

Kinja'd!!!1

You know what, I agree. I6s might be better in the standard models not in the M. At least not since the S65. Currently considering getting an e90 m3. But my ownership experience is limited and I feel like I will be jumping into a jet before learning to fly.

Do it do it do it!

Trust me you won't regret it.

My E90 M3 is the best overall car I've ever owned. And I currently also own a 997.2 Carrera.

I'm on mobile now. I need to type up a full list of reasons why the E90 M3 is the best car you can buy right now at any price once I am on my laptop.

I'm not kidding. Everyone needs and E90 M3 in their garage.

Yeah you're high or intellectually challenged. I see those often and they look awesome for a regular sedan type vehicle. Maybe you don't like the styling for some reason but they look way better than the last iteration which was basically just a grille switch on a Fusion. There's even a Hybrid if you need to hug trees. Those wheels aren't my favorite but the other types of wheels look great also.

Kinja'd!!! CRider > Nick-Speed
05/18/2014 at 19:37

Kinja'd!!!0

If that's the best Lincoln can do, if that is their halo car, yes it's a disappointment. A really nice Fusion is still a Fusion underneath. This thing was supposed to mark the rebirth of the brand and give the world hope that Lincoln could really come back. I'm still waiting on the car this thing was supposed to be. And the new Navigator has the exact same interior as the last F-150, WTF is up with that?

The '84 is more reliable and more comfortable than the any Corvette of the C3 era, and it's faster than most from the same. Only the '68-'74 cars were at least powerful, but none were as good at handling. =/
