So we had a mechanical engineer come into our a.p. physics class, and he did some cool stuff with liquid nitrogen and blew up some hydrogen balloons, but there is one thing he said that stuck with me. He said "who knows maybe the future of the engine is an helical engine that is 3-d printed (with metal of course) and uses a ball instead of a piston to compress the gas".............HOLY MOTHER OF F*CK I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT. Hell you know what, when I become an engineer, i'm going to try and make that. Somebody on here please print one out of abs and use air to test it out. But the idea is the ball would twist in the helical chamber, and the first explosion would push the ball and compress the gas on the other side of the ball. Then that will compress the next gas on the other side of the ball. The second side will then combust again and send the ball other way compressing freshly injected gas on the first side. Such a cool idea if you think about it.

There's some kind of sphere internal combustion engine being worked on. It's called a Huttlin Kugelmotor.

And myself being a Marketing major will find somehow to prove to the American car buyer that this is not some sort of witchcraft. haha

DO IT! Totally make it! We'll throw it my Honda for testing if you need to.

I imagined it as a tube and a ball that just went back and forth in the tube. Or like a loop and a few balls in there.

What is the ball doing, though? Is its inertia supposed to spin the helical chamber itself? Seems really neat, but I'm not sure it's practical. Pistons are physically attached to to the rest of the moving parts, so I'm not sure how a free-rolling ball is going to transfer its energy as efficiently.

That said, I would love to see this in action because it does sound cool.

Well, We'll see in about 15 years when I get my degree and perfect the idea.

Not sure how you're translating the force on the ball elsewhere to do work, but how bout a free piston engine?

Well the ball could be stationary and the helical chamber could go up and down and spin a gear. I have no idea, but i'm going to sit down right now and think about this.

Definitely do! The more I think about it, the more I like this idea.

Sorta like that, but with a ball. I don't even know, i'm still trying to think about how this would work myself.

Cool! I'd like to see a working model of that myself.

So would I. Still haven't conceived of how to do it.
