It's a baby Silverado!
Would one of these be a good buy for a GM person who would want a mid-sized truck? I've always liked how these have looked. They look a lot meaner than the Ford Ranger. The bed would be big enough for what I would use it for. Crew cab model would have enough passenger space.
The 5 cylinder models, which most were bought with, seem like they would have a good amount of power for the the size of the truck.
The interior is platic-y, but it's a truck. I could live with it. Plus available manual.
What do you guys think about these?

Much better than the Ranger. The interior looks sorta cheap though, the steering wheel looks straight out of a 90's Isuzu. Available manual is nice though. Hope the new Colorado has one.

The new one has a manual on 4-cylinder extended-cab models only.

I like them. My brother has an 05 or 06 regular cab, short box, 4 cylinder 5 speed. He loves it. It drives really nicely. I fit in it, even though I'm only 6', I have a tall torso.
I have always liked the looks of the crew cab 4wd ones. They just look right.

Cost almost as much as a full size truck and had worse fuel economy...

*edit
When new. Now you can get a fully loaded w/ V8 now for a little over 20k. Something you can't say about Silverados of the same year.

I never even thought about if I'd fit or not. I fit in the Taco, which is really close to the same size.

"Available manual". Good luck finding one. I think that the only 5-cylinder Colorado/Canyons that were available with the manual were the earlier ones with the 3.5L, and only in certain bodies and drivetrain combos (2WD or 4x4). The later 3.7L was auto-only in anything but an H3.
When I bought my used Sierra, I looked at a nice used Colorado ext. cab 2WD 5-cyl auto. I would've bought it, but it only had 2 seats. Picture bucket seats & a console in the front, like this,:
but without any seats in the back, like this:

The 5 cylinder, while likely competent enough, does not feel powerful at all. The truck lumbers along. If you can find a 5.3 equipped model, I've heard those are an order of magnitude better.

I guess the jump seats were optional.

I like them a lot. The new ones even more. Very similar to the Frontier I have.

I just wish they weren't so hard to find!

Yeah, might have a better chance with a Frontier if your into those.

Also I was reading on Wikipedia. It looks like the same engine from earlier models. The 3.7l I5. In 2009 got A change in torque. The same amount but at a much higher rpm for peak. But that is from Wikipedia.

I actually like the Frontier, but it seems all these small trucks are hard to find around me. The only ones that are easy to find are the S-10 and Sonoma.

if your serious about getting one. Hire someone to go out and find you one and bring it to you.

This is true.

It's the H3 without the giant blindspots! Huzzah!

Too bad it's replacement has been stricken with a bout of incurable gigantism.

I'm pretty sure the new one is almost as big as my dad's "full size" 2004

Oh man , I really like thse. Even more with the V8

I've heard to stay away from the 5cyl ones.

If only V8 ones were easier to find. I really think the 3.7 I5 would work just fine though. They're just really honest little trucks.

I don't think they ever offered the manual in the crew cab either

It's comfortable. I've been in an 07 Dakota, and a late 90s Ranger, and the Colorado was much more comfortable.

its sad that the only vehicle named after my home state is 2-ton hunk of plastic

In my opinion, they look good on paper. But apparently they were much less reliable than GM's full size trucks and they cost almost as much.
The only reasons to buy one of these is because you live in the city where the smaller size is a benefit and you want to save some fuel.
