Looking for a pocketknife under 15. There's a good Gerber in todays deals, but I'd like to see if my fellow Jalops have any other recommendations. I'd prefer folding and something that has some personality, and holds a good edge (of course). Don't really care for gimmicks or serration or anything like that. Oh, and my sharpening skills are not up to par (and my sharpener seems to not want to work) so something that comes sharpened to use would be great.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: All of you had great suggestions. However after doing some research I settled on a rebuilt Buck 110 - the only knife I've ever seen that was described by many, many people as the "perfect" knife. Thanks for all the advice!

It's $5 over your budget, but everyone says its wonderful. Or, go to Big 5 and see what Kershaw's they have for sale.

I used to carry a Gerber everywhere. I finally saw the light and got a Leatherman Wingman multi-tool and haven't looked back. Best $25 I've ever spent.

Your options at that price range aren't too great, I'd spend a bit more and know that you'll get a quality blade with good steel. Kershaw has some decent knives south of $30 and some awesome ones below $60. My EDC knife for the last 6 years has been a Kershaw Blur, I swear by it. They have the best warranty support and sharpening services of all the mid-range manufacturers.

I really like this Buck knife . Its a bit more than 15 bucks but I did get mine for only 25. Skinned more fish than count with it.

Gerber makes good knives, and they have some decent blades in the lower spectrum of the price range. Kershaw also has good knives but I'm not sure what their pricing is for their lower range, as I've never owned a Kershaw or looked into them more than what one of my friends has. I personally own a Buck knife, and have been very impressed and happy with it over the last couple years. While mine is a bit higher range than this , I know a guy who has one and says it's great, and even though its a over $15, I think you might be happier with it in the long run (plus it's made in 'Merica and has a good warranty).

The only other thing I'll say is this: If I were you, I wouldn't get one with a spring assisted blade. I think that it's

1. Kind of gimmicky and

2. The shrping can break and be a pain in the ass.

OPINEL! They start at under 15. And their blades are grade A. The handles might look like nothing fancy but they are there to last.

I've had a few spring assisted in the past and I agree. I'm not using it to get into fights with people where I need a switchblade (plus, you know, I have a switchblade for that right). Yours isn't available anymore though...

Multitool's a bit big for what I want. I keep one in my car, but I'm looking for a simple pocketknife atm

For under $15...go onto theclymb.com and get whatever shows up in that price range. You will get something competent but not awesome...maybe like SOG.

If you want to step up your game, then a Kershaw would be a good choice.

A little step up above that would be Spyderco. I personally have the Delica. Wife has the Dragonfly. Good knives.

Spyderco dragonfly looks tiny and doesn't look like it'll last - your experience has been otherwise?

Yep on all fronts! They are like your standard pathfinder knife. Solid blade that will last and a basic wooden handle. Got one from a friend years ago as a birthday present. Didn't know know them, and he was like "Every MAN needs to have an Opinel!" I was polite and thanked him, but I didn't know what that was.

A few years later, it turns out that it's a really good knife and I see more and more Opinel products being used by people around me.

A basic Opinel is a no thrills thing. Just a solid blade in a wooden handle but you asked for cheap thrills, and this is it. If you can find a store that sells them in the US and doesn't bend you over on shipping and fees, and the like, go for it!

Not that one, but I've had a ton of Spydercos and IMO they're the best knives for the $$. Very well made, good steel, quick opening, excellent lockup (irrelevant on the Grasshopper since it's a friction lock). I'd recommend the Endura and the Delica lines if you hadn't put on a price tag. Also the para-military is a benchmark blade. I've owned all of those at various points. I'm currently carrying a Buck Rush right now though, mostly because of the looks...it's good enough, but the Spydercos are better knives. bladehq.com is a good place to go and oogle knives and they usually have pretty good prices.

The problem with oogling knives there and on amazon are that you find some that look really cool and seem super high quality and have great reviews, but they're all reviewed by kids or moms that don't know anything about knives...can't tell if they know what a good mechanism should feel like, how sharp it should be, the heft it should have...

Like that one, I love the look and its rated great and is cheap, but I just know that it's not going to live up to what I want...I think if I had to put specs, it would be:

3"+ folding blade, good weight, looks cool, solid build, sharp. Basically I want it all, and I'm sure I could find one, but it's just sifting through the crap to get there...

It's kinda funny. I have carried a knife since childhood. When I went to work for Lowe's, they told me I could not bring it to work. But they issued me a razor knife/boxcutter to carry. ? WTF?

I started using one of these and they are not like a stone, but they keep a good edge and it works every time.

The cheapo Chinese knives are ok if it's just light duty stuff but expect the blades to rust and the mechanisms to wear. Also, they usually require a good stripping down, lube on the mechanism, locktite on all the screws, and blade centering if you don't want them to either fall apart or bind in short order. I've had tons and have no problem with them, but if I were just going to have one knife I'd go with a good namebrand lifer like a Spyderco/Kershaw/etc. The one you have there I wouldn't get personally because it has a lot of places it can catch when removing it from the pocket which I just find obnoxious.

personally at that price range, opinel. If you bump it up to around $30+ some very good spydercos are around. I've carried my spyderco sage2 for over 2 years now and its sharp as ever. Crkt has a neat one called the razel, a bit higher price but I've owned one before giving it to my buddy who was in need of one badly. He loves it.

Best advice, go to a decent knife store, depending on where you ate located this can be a chore. Find one you like, aesthetically and practically, then get that one. Then again the last time I was at a knife store I picked an Emerson, those are pricey.

pretty much any spyderco from a decent seller. I've got a few spanning from the base model el cheapo (for spyderco) to the semi custom $300+ range. I've never had a problem with any. A good place for reviews is http://www.everydaycommentary.com as they are very straightforward and concise.

I own the Spyderco Bug, which is the smaller cousin to the Grasshopper that jariten1781 recommended. It's great. Perfect for opening boxes, etc. Seems to hold an edge all right. I'm sure the Grasshopper is the same story.

I also own an assortment of Opinels, and while they are excellent value for money, they don't hold an edge very well due to the type of steel the blade is made of. This is balanced by the fact that they are ridiculously easy to sharpen. Seriously, you can sharpen an Opinel using the rough ceramic ring on the bottom of a typical coffee mug.

I think the thing I like most about both of these options is that neither the tiny knives nor the Opinels look dangerous, threatening, or "tactical," so if you pull out your Opinel to, say, help a coworker open a package, she's more likely to say "oh, thanks," instead of "eep!"

My wife has the Dragonfly in VG10 steel. She wanted it in pink. It is a perfect size to carry around everyday and very pocketable. Even though it is small, the blade length is very usable for most daily use tasks. Also not an intimidating knife to whip out in public. The Delica has a slightly longer blade and is still pocketable but not as easy as the Dragonfly. It is a on the cusp of getting too long for something you could use everyday. If you carry a blade longer than this you will probably get some stares and phone calls to the police if you casually whip it out in a store to open up a box. I would not recommend you carrying around something like a Paramilitary 2. That is more of a knife you take out to the bush. I suppose from a self defence perspective...a longer blade is better tho...if that is a concern. I carry my Delica in my camera bag. If I wanted something to carry every day in my pocket, I would get the Dragonfly.

Spyderco's are all very well made. Lots of good reviews online. Select a good steel. Don't think you will have any durability problems whether you pick Dragonfly/Delica/Paramilitary 2.

Opinel's have a line of carbon steel blades (they also have stainless steel too). The carbon steel holds a better edge than stainless steel and are easier to sharpen for the amateur. They will stain and pit if not taken care of (just make to wipe the blade dry everytime especially if cutting acidic foods). They are very reasonably priced. I think these are good knives for the price.

For some reason though, I still think of these as a picnic knife/cutlery more than an everyday use knife. I just imagine a Frenchman carrying these in a picnic basket to cut up fruit, cheese, meat and bread at the Saturday picnic in the countryside.
