So im not into the 360 / ps3 yet. I game on the PC and it is awesome. But due to my love for my computer it is currently sitting preciously in its storage box until I can find a space for it in my man cave.
While graphics on pc gaming is still as awesome as the first day I got it and way better than 360/ ps3, it is only until ps4 and xbox 1 go full storm) because graphics in games are being limited by current gen console systems.
That Being said
I want to get a 360 / ps3. I would like to play the console exclusive titles such as Forza Horizon and Red Dead redemption.
I love Gran Turismo, but believe it or not I still play GT4 on a real cool custom built simulator. Not to mention Fast and the Furious tokyo drift, Midnight Club, etc. But having the option to play and own GT 5/6 is of course AWESOME!
But in my search for XBOX 360 consoles and PS3's stuff that is putting me off:
Countless, I mean countless RROD 360's everywhere. Even ads or listings for working 360 consoles end up to be RROD (when the seller tests the system for me). A quick search on ebay shows the RROD mania. The more I research into it, what, 3 iterations of 360!!?!? and countless variations? Microsoft really seems to want to start from scratch. Its like they messed up the design of the 360 from start. And I think they did, due to the research and reading on the topic.
PS3 Systems are freaking expensive on the second hand market. I mean serious cash, like about $180 minimum on the second hand market. I am lucky my dad wants to give me his which is hardly played, the best version that he bought when it first released, for its Blue Ray capabilities.
Bear in mind I am in Australia. I am stringing some parts here and there; An old style at hard drive for the 360, two controllers, and hopefully a neglected fat 360 sitting by its lonesome for cheap. But three iterations of the console and various versions without compatibilities of hard drive just screams "I DONT KNOW WHAT I AM DOING" and makes me want to buy the cheapest of the lots and smash them together like the hulk and beg that it works. 4GB Xbox 360 S in 2010 what!? 4GB? In a 2'5" PC hard drive? Microsoft must be nuts nuts nuts in a really really stupid way. And the different versions of power supplies, chips (45nm and 60nm fabrications and power consumption hence less heat> less likely to RROD even though its still high att 15% RROD rate, wtf!!) the list of crap is endless.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_X
I will let you know when I succeed in my 360 quest!

I have a Xbox 360S 4GB, and mainly play Forza 4 and Horizon on it, I leave the majority of gaming to my PC though. just to clarify, the memory is internal, not on the HDD.
The RROD's are more common on the older 360 consoles, mainly the white one. I have my 360 hooked up to a capture card on the PC, so I can record stuff like this.

If you get a fat 360 that's been properly repaired, or is the later version (discernable by HDMI), it's actually pretty robust. My first one went for days short of 3 years, got replaced, and the replacement finally decommissioned for issues with the disc drive (excess noise) about 5 years later. Meanwhile, since that one was in the use of my younger brothers about two years from the end, I got another one, which RRODed as well, and I've been on a proper refurb from Gamestop for about a year or so.
But yeah. Crazypants failure rate, great controllers, interface, and games.

I got the el-cheapo 360 Arcade (no HD, just a 256MB memory card) when it came out, and still have it, and it's been rock solid except for one RROD and that was fixed under warranty. They even put in a quieter CD-ROM!
I later bought a 20gig HD for it. And just this week splurged (free) on a new controller because my original is getting worn out in the thumb sticks and I got a sticky B button.
It's all about placing it where it has enough airflow, and most kids don't. Hence all the heat related RROD's. Most are easily fixed, but not everyone wants to try, so they throw them out/up for sale.

Also, IIRC the 4GB was not a real HD, just a functionality fix until the idiot screaming "But I don't need a hard drive!" realized that yes, he did. A way to make the console usable without a real HD for arcade/etc. use.

I am trying to reply to your threads and conversations but can't seem to, jalopnik forum system is not letting me reply currently except to my own topic;
I think you are right about ps3 being more reliable, the failure rate is low for them during data released a while ago (reading articles from 2010). About 5% from most sites from memory
But Shocking!! - Read this guys
http://au.ign.com/articles/2009/
BY JIM REILLYIf your Xbox 360 hasn't broken down yet or suffered from the dreaded red ring of death, then consider yourself pretty lucky.
A new survey published in Game Informer's print edition indicates the Xbox 360 failure rate has climbed to a shocking 54.2%. The magazine surveyed nearly 5000 readers, asking them about their experience dealing with broken consoles.
Here are their findings:
Console failure rate
Xbox 360 54.2%
Playstation 3 10.6%
Wii 6.8%
Percentage of console owners who suffered a second hardware failure after the original repair.
Xbox 360 41.2%
Playstation 3 14.7%
Wii 11%
Percentage of people who rate their customer service experience "very helpful"
Nintendo 56.1%
Sony 51.1%
Microsoft 37.7%
I am also not a "fanboy" or what the term is. I really want all game consoles to succeed, Forza seems awesome!

I have somehow managed to own 360 for about 5 years without a single RROD. On the other hand my friend who has PS3 has had it replaced (both, the original and the slim version) multiple times because all sorts of problems. I'm not saying that Playstations are unreliable but they can have their fare share of issues as well if you're unlucky.

Yeah it involves complex taking apart of the console.
Then getting thermal paste and re applying it.
The only problem is the issue comes back a few months later and the console is totally gone. That is what happened to this computer guy I know who paid $150 for a broken one to own it for a short while after fixing it. this was like 4 years back.

Just for the sake of conversation, you're right about the backwards compatibility in early "fat" models, but not quite correct about Linux.
At one time, any version of the PS3 could run Linux. The feature was them removed from ALL units in a firmware update. Any unit that is still Linux-capable today hasn't been updated since then, and thus can't connect to PSN and play online.

Forza 4 is realistic, not as much as Gran Turismo. If you're playing mainly with a gamepad, it's not that noticeable, Damage is mostly cosmetic, but can affect how your car drives. I play with a Thrustmaster 458 Italia wheel (which only works on xbox, and the pc as a controller), which feels cheap, but does the job. Forza 4 is for on-road tracks only, so no rally stages. Horizon has a Rally DLC, but I haven't bought that yet.
The open world in Horizon is actually quite nice, although a bit small. I like cruising around in the game, even with a bone-stock Miata, it's fun. The story is a bit lame, but still pretty cool. a good variety of races are in the game, I actually smoked an RX7 with a classic Mini once in a mixed terrain race, not sure why the AI thinks an RX7 on dirt is a good idea.

I can not stress this enough do not buy a 4G 360 you will run out of space immediately. Plus the RROD is largely redundant, this happened 7 years ago and any white 360s for sale were most likely repaired so that won't be a problem. However white 360s also come with a 12GB harddrive that will be filled up after 2 games. The best choice is to buy a 360 Elite (the black 1st gen). They avoided the RROD crisis and come with 120GB hard drives. That said the problem with buying xboxes is xbox live i.e paid subscription which is avoided on the PS3. However they ares still significantly more expensive at first but cheaper in the long run. In the end do you want forza or gran turismo. I recommend Forza 4 and Horizon, those two are the bench marks for console racing games as far as I'm concerned.

Buying a pre used 360 is always risky as you might get a dud but my original launch day 360 still works so take that as you will.
The elite shouldn't be a problem if an elite hasn't broke down in 5 years it is not going to now. The disc tray problem came about due to poorly aliened lasers thus after enough use and vibrations they would come out of place and be unable to read disks.
The problem with 2nd gen was people moving them with a disc inside. It is ridiculous the amount of people I know who have busted their 360 by knocking it over but then again that is the reason I don't place mine vertically.
The 1st gen 360 had replaceable hard drives as shown above. So my advice would be to either look for a cheap 1st gen 360 and a hard drive. given that you are quoting in dollars I can't really offer prices but it they are in line with prices here in the UK, this should be an economically viable option. Plus the Forza games will be real cheap since they were in all bundles for 360 when they were released and people tend to trade in bundle games.

You're the first person I've ever met who doesn't like MK.

The galant is in forza 4 but not horizon. The rally dlc only comes with 5 cars which seems bad at first but then you find out that all 200 cars can be rally raced, this includes anything from a 68 camaro to 65 amg.
The games have got enough content without having to worry about dlc (plus it is really expensive(but also very good value 66 pence per car)) and the multiplayer in public lobbies is just full of ... lets call them bad drivers.

I have a massive Steam library, yet I'm always either in one of my favorite games, or trying something new that's probably free anyway. Or iRacing. I love iRacing.
Mostly, though, I don't have time to play games any more... because grown up :(

don't grow up... don't. use games as a platform for imagination.. to build other cooler stuff that benefits everybody (mankind)

You can access other peoples phones, control traffic lights and security cameras, cause blackouts and tons of other stuff. There's some trailers on Youtube that explain it all quite well.

So basically the main protagonist has a cell phone that is tapped into Chicago's grid, this gives him access to everything from bank accounts to security cameras to stoplights. He also shoots people and drives cars.

i like doing that to stuff to match it like lego, not to cover the "ugly" bottom though
but due to heat and my style preference its a shelf a console :)
would be great to get a transparent shelf and put the ps3 above the ps4 like you are doing :)

Thanks for the advice. Very excited now :). Very informative you sure know your stuff.
I like the elites but the problem is the cd drive like you said. Had to pass up on a couple now so far.

No cabinet, they're on top of the pictured computer desk. However, if you're hankering to look at something cool, I'll be taking pics of these once they come in.
