Armstrong 1/2 drive socket set. $266.
I went into Sears yesterday to buy a 1/2" drive socket set and I discovered that craftsman sockets are now mostly made in china. I left in disgust. How does this lovely set look to Oppo? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Sad as it may be, they still come with the lifetime warranty and can be had for much less than those.

There's a lifetime warranty, but Craftsman production gives filthy foreigners jobs. Is it warranty worth foreigners having jobs?

Sucks that they moved production over to China, but it's still pretty good stuff. If you are going for real quality, go Snap-on, Proto, etc
Buy quality shit on craigslist for cheap, or buy Craftsman (or even *gasp* harbor freight). My $.02

No. No it's not. That's why we must buy USED Craftsman stuff that was made in 'murica.

I think I'm going to spend the extra coin. I can't stomach buying Chinese when there are excellent American options. Plus I doubt Sears will be around for my entire lifetime.

I appreciate your sarcasm. When it comes down to it, I'd rather support American manufacturing than Chinese.

yeah I HATE cheap tools. I've set foot in a harbor freight once, never again.

Honestly, I don't mind them. I've found their torque wrenches to be simply amazing value for money (had the calibration guys at work take a look at my set and we found that they are just as accurate as the snap-on torque wrenches in our lab), and their sockets, screwdrivers, and other simple tools are all good enough. The only thing I've really come to NEED good quality in is socket wrenches, there is just something about the weight and comfort of a properly made tool (not to mention approximately 2X more precision in the ratcheting mechanism).
Hell I even bought one of those terrible $20 harbor freight drills a few years ago, and you know what? It's still going strong.

Yeah I'm sure they are OK for a while. I guess I'm pretty young and am building up my tool collection and I would prefer this stuff to last for life. Especially wrenches and other hand tools, so I'm buying the expensive stuff now so I don't have to in 20 years. Plus I'm about as pro buy American as they come so that probably colors my glasses a bit as well.

Understandable, I have a harbor freight within walking distance of my apartment, so that biases me quite a bit.

When I started turning wrenches my dad bought me a 3-400 piece craftsman set. When they break or don't work well enough I replace them with something better. The wrenches are a bit short, but often that is advantageous, sometimes the expensive ratcheting wrenches are just too long, and the stubbies too short. Cheap tools have their place. And honestly, a lot of the snap-on, etc. hand tools are way overpriced. Spend your money where it counts the most, no reason to buy a $375 snap-on cooling system pressure tester if 99% of the cars you work on are air cooled Volkswagens. But if you build a lot of engines you might want to spend $500 on that digital angle torque wrench.

ended up buying it. It wasn't that much more than craftsman -30-40 bucks and its not made in China.
