Are people really that uninformed about racing that they think that a stock Nissan Altima (no loud exhaust, no roll frame, etc) with just some stickers is automatically a race car? Or does Nissan just think everyone watching TV is dumb enough to believe that this was a real "surprise"?

But it's got active understeer control!! Must be a racecar!

And then again, Camry did the same kind of commercial, didn't they?

I think it's more Nissan is hoping viewers are dumb. It's clearly a play on Toyota's amusement park "wow I didn't know you could do that in a Camry!" crap commercial. Nissan is trying to let the masses know that their beigemobile is exciting too!

At my previous job, pretty much everyone besides me was under 30 and in love with Honda. I remember one day, one of them came in upset after an argument with his brother. Though he caught the guy banging his girl or something the way he was moping, but that wasn't it at all.

"How dare he say Civics aren't sports cars!"

Yeah. The other honda bros were on hand to provide the needed comfort. facepalm.jpg.

I can't really speak on what national demographics are doing/thinking, but I can see why Nissan thinks this might be at least plausible reasoning in the minds of it's consumers.

Well anyone with no real knowledge of race cars will act the same as they did in any cars you throw in a circuit. I bet that if they took a drive into a Yugo around the same circuit they'd be like "OMG, SO MUCH Gs, WHOA IT'S FLYING I CAN FEEL IT FLOATING. OMG THE CAR BRAKES SO HARD THAT THE NOSE IS DIVING HARD FOR SO LONG AND IT'S SHAKING. OMG THE ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE IT'S WORKING HARD, IT MUST BE POWERFUL!! IT'S SO RACECAR!!!". That is until they get into a real racecar...

I think this is the one I was referring too. It's not really racing per se, but more "Look how exciting this Camry can be!!" "OMG, I had no idea a Camry could do that!!"

Haha, the best part of that commercial is the fact that it doesn't require the car to do much more than drive. I mean, that course would be exciting in any car at highway speeds. Looks like the "driving a slow car fast" principle is a good way to market a car, though.
