I always referred to him as "the coolest man alive" I always wanted to be like him, he always seemed different than the rest of his family, I.E. Sarcastic and more apt to putting people down than actually saying anything with a damn. I always thought he was different, sincere. He's an actor (literally, that;s his job) and fakes being different, but deep down, he's a ROlland through and through.

My dad is the most manipulative asshole I know. and I spent years idolizing him. He cares more about himself and his career as an actor than being a dad. He only cares about me when it's convenient to show off to his asshole, artsy, pretentious friends.

This may sound uncaring, but it's actually what will help you with this situation: you don't have to like your father, but you should love him. If he does father things and cares for you, that is. Dads will always be revered by sons who see through rose-colored glasses. As we grow older, those glasses are shed and we see people as they actually are. Some people are more imperfect than others, but they are people.

You, as his son, have a duty to call him out when he is being uncaring. You shouldn't do it on a mean way, just let him know when he's not being the man he should be. I've had to do this in the past myself. It isn't easy, but it's our duty.

Warning: short long(ish) personal story ahead.

So when my mom and uncle were kids, my grandfather was an alcoholic. A raging alcoholic, apparently. My mom won't tell me all of what he did, but it was certainly quite bad.

Some time after my grandmother divorced him, but before I was born, he found Jesus and got all straightened out; he was a loving part of my childhood growing up. My mom obviously forgave him, but my uncle always resented his dad (understandably) and refused to see him for years.

Well, a few years ago, my uncle finally came to terms and invited my granddad up to his place. However, grandpa's previous lifestyle of alcohol and cigarettes caught up with him; he tragically died of a heart attack about a month or so before his scheduled visit with my uncle.

It devastated my uncle pretty hard... It's been over five years now, but I can tell he's still not over the fact that he never got to meet his dad one last time.

My point:

Could be worse. Plenty of people grow up with abusive fathers/no father. You have at least some sort of relationship with your dad, and that's to be cherished. People aren't perfect, and that's frustrating. However, resentment is a dangerous hole to go down. Just tell him your feelings (respectfully). Sounds like it's hard for him to articulate it, but I'm sure he actually does love you. You're his kid, after all.

I can't find the video but there was this great TV show on Comedy Central a long time ago called Dr. Katz. He would have comedians on with "problems." This was my favorite line of all time from Dave Attell-

"You know when you're growing up you think your dad is Superman, but then you realize he was only a guy wearing a cape."
