Rednecks love blue headlights

So I just moved to NC and I've noticed that the locals love their bro truck's headlights to be blue (except that one guy that had green headlights). They drive me a , probably, unnaturally crazy. They're so bright, but you can't see anything with them because they're blue, not white.

A truck on my street has those same lights, they're just horrible at night.

With projection headlights, you can see a hell of a lot better.

Not if they're blue... Google the term Color Rendering Index.

Actually, it's probably great that they are so purple (color temperature upwards towards 14000K)

Light output is lower the higher you go on color temperature. Which is why all factory discharge light systems are 4100K. It's the sweet spot for output per watt consumed.

Properly designed and OEM mounted projector headlamps, yes.

Improperly mounted projectors, not really.

Yeah, I know that, but even genuine hid's have a blue tint. The blue, blue ones are ridiculous, but actual hid's are useful.

I despise blue headlights. I recall reading somewhere that a police agency is trying to outlaw them, saying that only police have blue lights. Sounds good to me.

Well, I think it's more of not using projection headlamps that is more of a problem.

The problem there is that the reflector housings are designed for a filament light source, and are constructed around it. The light comes from specific points in the housing.

An arc lamp moves where the light is originating from, ever so slightly. This is what causes the crap focus and scattering of the light, when you put a D2R capsule in an H4 housing.

There ARE HID lamps from OEMs which were reflector based. Nissan used the D2R capsules for a while (G35 Sedan to 2007 and Coupe to 2006), and Mercedes used them on the W210. If the housing is designed for an arc lamp source, those work just fine (I had D2R lamps on my G35).

I do like my HID's, but most of them don't offer the visibility of a quality halogen light because the CRI isn't as good. Modern halogens put out a lot of white light. The benefits of HID is mainly that it uses less power per lumen and... And this is the big one... People will pay a more money for a car if it has them.

I think it's more a problem of people falling victim to marketing and hype.

They already aren't legal. There's zero way those headlights meet regulations for forward illumination.

The problem is that they poor light out of them to make up for the fact that, at those color temperatures, you have almost zero depth perception.

I'm more a fan of Xenon Gas Discharge lights in this application not because of the CRI (You don't give up a lot moving from 5000K to 4100-4300K, remember that professional camera flash lamps are Xenon arc lights, and so are IMAX projector light sources), but rather because of the close to double light output over a comparable halogen source.

That is important for applications where maximum light output is a good thing. As long as the CRI of a source is over 70, the color rendering is generally considered acceptable (hence the reason you see Metal Halide lamps inside and HPS lamps outside)

But all you have to do is slap "For Off Road Use Only" on a turd, and you could sell that at Advazoeilly'paquest or Canadian Tire.

I got a ticket for having blue led lights just as markers because I was neither a snow plow nor a cop.

HPS is the worst. I'm glad that white LED is starting to take over this low power consumption area lighting business. With HPS, there's so much light outside (right outside my house for instance) but you still can't see anything.

I grew up in Chicago. Streets and Sanitation loves their LPS and HPS lamps.
