I'm a fan of buying the insurance on a rental car, and then beating on it mercilessly. I realize !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but it really is fun to unleash some of your frustration on a vehicle in which you paid a little extra for permission to do so. I've never killed one, but I do not treat them nicely. I can report to you all that the CV joints on W-body Impalas make one hellacious noise when you're doing figure-8's in a fallow cornfield. When I discovered that same Impala did not have ABS, I thoroughly enjoyed turning its front tires into dodecagons. And I must say, I was mighty impressed at how well the street-spec Goodyears on that Trailblazer did in the mud. A few months ago when I got stuck with that Chevy Spark, I got a chance to do handbrake turns in the snow.

So, what's the worst thing any of you have ever done to a rental car?

Nothing too bad. I put 3600 miles on a brand new Volvo V70 in ten days, and I smoked a bunch of cigars in a Lincoln Town Car.

Neutral dropping a Chevy Captiva at EVERY SINGLE LIGHT. On a related note, turns out it does not up-shift on it's own in "manual mode" so I spent a bit of time (about half an hour or so) bouncing off the rev limiter in first gear in a cornfield (rally mode engage!), then a bit of time on the highway in second gear. The check engine light came on (something to do with the transmission I think), but I cleared it before returning.
I also took a Camry to a track day once...

Nothing bad unless a handbrake slide is bad in a sentra. But I might have a rental for a few days next week. Any ideas for stuff to do?

Have you seen that episode of Top Gear where they are playing on the beach in I think an XKR, 645ci, and something else? Did that in a rear wheel drive '13 MB E350, bounced off the rev limiter a bunch. Unfortunately, the sand was pretty dry in a lot of places and I got stuck for a while, Mr and the wife had to dig for almost an hour to get out, but it was all a blast.

I just wanted to let you know that I hate you for leading me to tht rental car post. The one with all the front page comments. I just read a terrible article followed up by a bunch of random GM/American car hate.

I was given a Cavalier once when my car was having warranty work done. Some friends and I dragged te back wheels across the parking lot. I figured it could spin the tires with the handbrake on. Instead it just crept through the parking lot while dragging the locked back wheels. Also had the ESC kick on in a Charger while trying to make a 90 degree turn across traffic. Thought I was gonna die. It just kills the throttle.

Picked my nose and wiped it under the seat. I was 12 at the time.

Went to MA for our honeymoon to meet members of the wife's family who hadn't been able to come to the wedding. Got stuck in a downpour in a much older suburb of Boston, the kind that doesn't have any drainage. Blasted our brand new rental Matrix through about 18" of water in an intersection and it started knocking. Drove it furiously for 2 days after and returned it, still knocking. I think it had 1200 miles on it

Threw up in the back of one. The first time I threw up on any car. This was the car in question, it was a rented Renault Scala exactly like the one pictured bellow which is basically a 10 year old Nissan Sentra with a 4 speed auto. Took us all through Chiapas though, so I respect that from it.

I'm pretty sure its a requirement that all rental cars must be puked in, so you were just filling that car's quota.

Hahaha! I apologize for offending your delicate sensibilities! I like his articles, but yeah, there was a lot of hate in those comments. Haters can hate, but I love my GMC, plastic dash and all.

Yay! The worst part is that I just left the car crashed into the snowbank, as it was directly outside of my house.

Haha I did it in a bag, and I never thought I would get car sick ever in my life. But the roads in Chiapas were the killer.

Well, as my father drunkenly informed a guy I was dating, I was apparently conceived in a rental car, with a sunroof. So there's that.

I treat rental cars like they are my own. As a car enthusiast, I can't stand to see any machine be abused, whether it's a cheap little shitbox I don't own, or not. The beauty in any car is when it works properly. What you are advocating would be like calling yourself a dog lover, but then kicking everyone's dog that isn't yours.

Except dogs are sentient beings, and cars are not. But I think there are plenty of people like you, who won't treat any car badly. I respect that.
