No H1 pictured. I only see a decidedly un-Jalop Hummer H3.

fixed! Not the most Jalop but for Canadian winters, almost ideal.

Hah, I know that place!

There's also a few interesting cars at one of the houses around Nicolas Sharon park. I love Lethbridge for that reason - tons of awesome cars.

Right across from the uni, I actually lived on that street but never ventured down that far. Might have to streetview that one by the park. What else have you seen around town?

I saw a new Stingray last night, R8 last week, M5 yesterday, and a Viper once.

Hmm, now let me think. Every day on my way to school I usually see a few old Mercedes Benzes, an old Volvo (from the 60's?), a k-car/truck, a Fiat 500 Abarth, a Plymouth Roadrunner (I think), a Miata, and a few others I know I'm forgetting. Usually when I'm out on a walk with my wife I'll spot a few old roadsters.

There really is quite a strong car culture here.

Oh, that reminds me - once last summer I spotted a Dodge Viper ACR in the parking lot at the University.

The uni parking lot is typically full of Camrys and parents handed down trucks. Uni president drives that really nice Merc that is typically parked outside Anderson. And one of the Geog profs drives a nice Volvo GTL, thats about all I have seen at the uni.

I've seen a Porsche in the Anderson Hall lot as well. Not sure what model though.

Are you still in Lethbridge over the summer, or off doing other things?

Cool!

I'm hoping to stay here as well. I've lived and worked in Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge. I much prefer Lethbridge. In Calgary, I would spend at least an hour and a half a day commuting (45 minutes each way). I hated it - especially nearly being run over on my bike on a daily basis. Edmonton was nice, but the weather here in Lethbridge is so much better. Lethbridge really is the perfect size - big enough to have the good stores, but small enough to get around without any trouble.

Unfortunately there isn't a ton of computer related work, so finding a job might be a bit tricky.

Ya the amount of jobs here is the only crap factor. I lucked out with the job I got and maybe you will too. I really like Lethbridge now, though I still spend about an hour commuting everyday. Tecconect on the north side always has smaller business's looking for people

The facilities at tecconnect really are impressive. A month or two ago I had a chance to tour Blackbridge's server facilities there. They are way more impressive than anything I've seen elsewhere (including some major oil and gas companies).

I'm also in the process of starting a small business, which will hopefully one day be successful enough that it will become my primary job. Me and another fellow recently won the South Venture Business Plan Competition, and were awarded $10,000, so we are using that as seed money to get things going. We also got into the Microsoft BizSpark program, so we are using that to cover a bunch of web hosting costs for the next three years.

Ha ha! Awesome!

Seriously though - that facility there is one of the nicest I've seen. The non-lethal fire-extinguishing system is pretty slick, as is that massive generator out back. I'd have no worries at all about throwing a few racks full of servers in there, if I had the need (or funds) to do so.

They fired the generator last week for a test, the black diesel smoke was something of beauty in my eyes.

There is lots of room in there now, but we are starting to get more and more orders in. I work on the satellite imagery side of Blackbridge, the data center is pretty awesome though.

That's still pretty cool.

I've been doing a bit of work with various mapping services as part of the business idea. Feel free to poke around and check it out. https://pylons.info (zoom out, then look over at Lethbridge. There's a few things there you can see).

Right now we are using OpenStreet, but plan on changing to Google Maps for the web version, and each mobile platform will use their own respective mapping services.

The basic idea is that if you are bored and looking for something to do, you can open up the Pylons app (or web page) and see what local events are happening. Events are shown on the map as little orange markers. The color of the marker corresponds to the popularity. It gives people a way of finding what popular events are happening nearby, as well as allows people to give feedback on events. Right now there isn't a lot of data in there, but we're working on that. (Of course, right now my thesis is taking priority).

We are hoping to have both the Android and iOS versions out by the end of the summer, in time for all the new students (and related events).

I really like the concept, though not much happens around here. If you could integrate the book of faces or twitter you could likely get a lot of users. Good luck!

And yes, Google Maps makes everything easier. Trust me.

You'd actually be surprised at how many things happen here that people never hear about.

For example, back in September the city put on free monster truck rides and hot dogs at the dump. There was also a pretty awesome used Blu-ray/DVD sale in the basement of the library, where anything was $2. H&R Transport will occasionally sell of truckloads of stuff like margarine, cheese, and garlic bread - loads that, for one reason or another, were rejected by the stores. Unless you know where to look, you never hear about crazy stuff like this.
