I have a bone to pick with the taillights of the Explorers. Those three LEDs at the top, specifically. Why? Seriously, why? They go with nothing, just floating up there. Did you just have some extra bulbs lying around and think, "man what are we going to do with these? Just stick them somewhere in the taillights? OK."

Isn't that some US DOT side marker regulation thing?

No, the D of lights wrap around the edges enough for that

Oh and there is a side reflector on there already in the tail light... hmmm.

LED bulbs are the new (lazy) way for car designers to get creative.
It's way easier and cheaper to fuck with your LED patterns than it is to come up with interesting sheet metal.
Thanks Audi for starting this shit!

The D's don't wrap enough, note the placement of them 3 little ones:

I think Mathaias is right. The "D" (yes I'm giggling right now) must nor go around far enough to meet some Criteria. My Old Protege had to have side markers in the Front Bumper because of that kind of BS. Then they started putting turn signal marker lights in the fenders so you didn't need the ones in the bumper.
