"Looking to sell my Caledonia Green 1977 Mercedes-Benz 240D. A/C Blows ice cold, 30mpg, runs and drives great! Nice interior, power everything (including sunroof!), new windshield, too much to list! Classic example of a W123 car. 4spd Manual Transmission - and RARE Bosch European spec headlamps which take modern bulbs. Low 225k original miles.

Turns a lot of heads and is very economical/daily driveable. Does not leak a single drop of any fluid. A/C blows ice cold and was done by local specialist—warrantied job and has 0 freon leakage. All receipts kept. Paint is original and in great shape.

Asking $3999 for the car."

God. Damn. It.

225k miles is not "low miles". For fucks sake, 150,000 isn't "low miles". Low mileage is not a function of vehicle age and actual mileage, low mileage is literally low mileage!

Nope. Again, low miles is not a function of age and distance, it's a function of just distance. I don't care how old your car is, 225k miles is still fucking 225k miles. It infuriates me to see people post a vehicle for sale and advertise "low miles", then I look at it and the odometer has rolled over twice. It's like calling an E46 coupe "rare" because it has the sport package option - most of the damn things came with it standard!! You wouldn't say a Maserati Mistral has low miles if it wore 175k on the odometer? Hell that's only 4,000 miles a year!

I've seen a lot worse for similar money. It really is going to be slow (at least it's not automatic), but if it passes inspection, one could do worse. Bodywork appears to maybe have a little patina (paint on these can be buffed out with amazing results) and I'd like to see more interior/dash shots to judge condition. Unusual color is nice. I am sure there's a little room for negotiation, too.

That engine has nearly the same specs as the V4 in my Saab 96 (60-odd HP, 100-odd lb-ft) but has to lug around 50% more mass. And my car is already slow. There is such a thing as too slow, especially when you're dealing with a heavy nonturbo diesel.

Would commute, would baby, would errand, would infuriate people stuck behind you on a hill until they realized at the last moment that they should be nice because they might have some awkward relationship to you unbeknownst to them, like maybe being the favorite now-emeritus professor of the owner of the company they work for.

It looks like an absolutely brilliant example — and one of the two Achilles heels (a/c) is said to work fine and the other (automatic transmission) is not fitted. The price is a bit high for these, but if I had an uncommitted few grand and an empty garage space (alas, 0-for-2 there) I'd be on the phone with the seller and checking Southwest's schedules into Tulsa simultaneously right now, hoping it turned out to be as nice in person as in the pictures.

(Speaking of which, this could be a figuratively and literally shining example of how to prep and display a car for sale. All those Craigslist slackers who can't even be bothered to pull their personal items out of the cabin and run the vacuum should study them carefully — especially the ones who want more money for less car.)

There was one of these that lived around the corner from me when I was at university in Bristol; it was even in the same colour, which somehow suits this old Merc, in my opinion anyway. If it hadn't been for the fact I'd just bought an old beater VW T3 van, and that if I turned up at home with another vehicle I'd be likely to lose my head I would have left the owner a 'how much?' note.

If anyway happens to live in Bristol (UK) is it still about? It used to live near Durdham Downs.

My aunt had an 82 (or was it 83) 300TD. Blue on Beige. She bought it new, and drove it until 2003. Serviced religiously by the same mechanic throughout the life of the car. Garage kept, driven on weekends, had well under 100k when she got rid of it. She was going to give it to me - but my Mom and her were having some sort of sibling spat (whatever 60 year old women fight about??), and she gave it to her mechanic.

I guess the guy deserved it since he took care of the car its entire life. But yes, I'm still bitter.

I should say that there are two cars notable for their absence here: the BMW E30 and the NA Mazda Miata. And there are good reasons why those two cars aren't in this challenge.

First of all, let me say that everyone knows both the NA Miata and the E30 are excellent low-cost cars. They drive great, they look great, they make you feel good owning them, and they're (reasonably) reliable. The problem is that everyone knows how good the E30 and NA Miata are. Maybe five or six years ago you could get a nice E30 for five hundred bucks and enter it in the 24 Hours of LeMons or Rally Mexico or whatever.

But now if you own a halfway decent E30, you can expect strangers to shove four grand in your face every time you pull up to an auto parts store. Both the E30 and the NA Miata are going to owners who are nice people, people who will follow strict maintenance protocols and wax the paint, and restore them. This means these late '80s/early '90s wonders just aren't beaters anymore. They're simply nice old cars. They great, but they just don't belong in the running.

That and all you fartsniffers would only vote for them and they would win the contest no matter what. So that's no fun.

Once the trusty old EA82 takes a shit, she will be getting the STI treatment. However, I just changed out all the gaskets and now she's a rumbling away. I thought I killed her a few weeks ago but it ended up being a blown ECU fuse.

This is my friends car, I have driven it several times. It attracts a ridiculous amount of attention for an old mercedes.

I'll do you one better than an E34... how about an E39 540 6-speed with less than half the miles of that W123.

Same price. Nice color, too.

You mean to tell me that my '73 dodge doesn't have 16,000 miles!

I'd love to race one of these against my 5.7 diesel powered Delta 88. I'm not sure which of us would set a track record for most leisurely acceleration.

I personally count it as among one of the most fun to drive cars ive ever driven. It's just fast enough that if you drive it completely flat out, you're moving a little faster than the rest of the traffic on the road. The tires are relatively skinny and give up grip progressively and easily. The four speed manual is precise, smooth and well weighted.

Being able to drive a car at the limit all the time is awesome and that's just what it comes down to.
