I found this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I needed it then and I got it. 1953 M38A1, full body off frame restoration about 10 years ago, less than 1000 miles on it since the restoration.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I didn't get the trailer or most of the larger spare parts (engine, axles etc) since I have no space for them. But as a result I got the Jeep for $6000, which I think is a pretty good deal. The body is in great shape with no rust or rot. The paint isn't the best with the primer showing though but it adds a little character I think.
New canvas top and seat covers. 5 new wheels and tires. The steering gearbox and bell crank could use rebuilding but they work and the rebuild kits were included with the vehicle. 4x4 hi and low work. 8000lbs winch driven by a mechanical PTO off the transmission works as well.
I went and completed the paperwork today and got the title, I was planning on picking it up today as well but it's raining pretty hard today and I didn't feel like driving 50 miles in the rain in a vehicle with no doors, seatbelts, rollbar or insurance. So we'll pick it up in a few days with a trailer.
I really like the original 1953 plates as well which are Texas legal. I'm actually going to be sharing the Jeep with my roommate so it's only $3000 out of pocket for me. Should be a fantastic vehicle to cruise around Austin in, top off and windshield down. And then take it somewhere for some light off-roading. The gearing on this thing is hilariously low. The differentials are something like 4.82 geared and the whole thing is gear limited to like 50mph.
Either way I'm excited, I'm heading back to the rig today for about 10-12 days but as soon as I get back I'll post some more pictures and driving impressions.

Noice. I like any and all round-headlight Jeeps with windshield mirrors and toys. Is that hole in the fender a fresh-air-heater like the Land Rover "Kodiak"? I haven't got one on mine, but we're outfitting my cousins with one, a vintage Warn, rear PTO, and front bumper jerry-can boxes.

The hole in the passenger side fender is a spot for optional battery terminals apparently for jumping other vehicles/getting a jump since the stock battery cover was held down by like 8 or 10 bolts. But I don't have that option and the battery cover on this on has been modified with a hinge and latch.

I was assigned one - a 1952 M38A1. And was still in the Army National Guard when these were replaced by the Ford Pigmy “Jeep” known for easily rolling over. I loved the M38A1 and hated the Ford. Guess that state ment sums it up pretty well. When they were phasing them out, I had a chance to buy one in great shape with a new engine for $1000. Didn’t have the money. I’ve wanted to kick myself many times for not getting it. Enjoy it. Sounds like you got a good one. Yeah, they are geared low but would idle up a tree if it could get traction.
