Well, almost. Twenty years ago today, I was old enough to get my learner's. I got it a few days later, and got my full DL a few weeks later. There was no graduated licence, no services card, no enhanced licence with a chip, no raised print, no holograms, no magnetic strip. It wasn't even plastic. It was a laminated piece of cardboard with a film photo stuck to it.

Happy Birthday to me. I feel old.

I had the same thing, for a year until they made it in plastic. A few years before me it was a piece of paper. 19 years as of a few months ago for me! Now we can collectively say...

I save all my old licenses when it's time for renewal. I just wish I had my first two.

Back in the 80s, Virginia had this paper/plastic hybrid. There was a laminated card with your photo, as well as a printed, folded paper section with your information They both fit in this little envelope. I can't even find a photo of it online.

Damn, I wish B.C. let me keep them. They wouldn't let me keep my old Alberta licence plate, either. Bastards!

When I got my first license thirty years ago in VA, the license was a was clear vinyl with a pocket on opposite sides. One side held the photo card, which was a composite of your photo, state seal, and handwritten name and date. The other half held a three-fold cardstock insert with address, donor info, etc. Laughingly simply to forge.

When I was in my 20s I went through some different hair colors and styles. Whenever I made a drastic change, I "lost my license" and went to DMV and got another one.
