Should I go hang myself now. I've pretty much ruined all chances of getting an oil internship next summer.

Working physicist here. I failed calculus TWICE my first year of college. Didn't stop me from going to a top-ten PhD program. Press on.

There's your problem, it's punctuation.

I bet you could still get an oil internship in North Dakota. Good luck paying rent however.

You'll be fine. Yes, grades are important but they're not the be-all and end-all. You also need to have a good personality and be likable. Yes, smart, jerks get jobs but so do above average nice guys. In simple terms, even though you might not have the best grades, as long as you are personable and seem competent during interviews, then you should be fine.

However, I've never worked in the oil industry, so I may be completely off base.

Your problem is you have no will to go on plenty of important people have gotten bad grades and they turned out fine. I just failed a math test and I know I will be fine. Don't make such a big deal about grades.

It's been said below, but it's really all about the interview and perseverance.

Don't stress too much, you had almost no chance getting an oil internship as a Sophomore anyways; and regardless once you're looking for a full time position SLB will be there to grab everyone with a low GPA. Ask me how I know.

Grades are overrated. I graduated with not a very stellar GPA in mechanical engineering from Cal Poly SLO (a great engineering school) and I used the skills i learned in the machine shops my 4.5 years at college to land my first and pretty much my dream job right out of college. I had plenty of internships as well through out the summers so don't worry just about grades. I know a few people with 3.7's and higher gpa's that don't have jobs still.

Don't even talk like that, man. You'll be fine. Get involved around campus to show that side of you, and keep cranking.

No, don't hang yourself. Try again. I FINALLY got 4 A's last semester after a few failed attempts. Keep pushing because you'll do better.

I'm just gonna repeat what most guise say here. ;)

Had m'self a bad quarter in Junior year - hammering out a D AND a E (Advanced computer math, bah! hated the prof >_< ).

Came back next quarter pumped up with gallons of coffee, "Eye of the Tiger" on repeat streaming on my earphones, and a study buddy to throw ideas against. Managed a B and a C for the same classes.

Aside from getting you past the resume-sorting bots, a fantastic GPA won't do a lot of good in reality when it comes to getting interviews, finding opportunities and "networking" (talking and meeting the right people) would do more for you!
