I am looking for a car and have been for sometime and have narrowed it down to two vehicles.
THE SCIROCCO
It is a unmolested Scirocco for $1200. It has been owned buy a VW enthusiest all of it's life. (not actual picture)
THE FIAT
$500 X1/9. It has been sitting for 9 years and needs valve work and a water pump.
Oppo I need your help to decide. As always you are my only hope.

Either that Scirocco's bargain of the century, or it's a basket-case despite being owned by an enthusiast.
Personally I'd rather have the X1/9, but it likely needs lots of work doing. Do you live somewhere you have to worry about rust? If so, it's probably only an X1/5 or 6 by now.

Scirocco! It's going to be the more enjoyable car of the two, and less of a headache, especially considering the fact that it's been taken care of by an enthusiast.

scirocco. I had a 16V as my first water cooled car and it was great. Especially to find an unmolested one. DO IT, POST PICS

The Fiat might collapse around your ears. It's cheap, though, with mid-engine freakiness, and you might be able to get a lot of laughs out of it. Might or might not be a nightmare to make minimally reliable.
The Scirocco is a practical choice that is also cool.
No chance of getting the Scirocco to drive while you fix the X1/9 and see if you really have a preference, is there?

How much spare time and money do you have? My gut says Scirocco. The VW community is really supportive and helpful. The FIAT community doesn't exist. Consider parts availability, people who know how to work on the car, interchangeability of components.

Run away from the Fiat, run very far. Once you run out of breath, hide in a dark room and think about what you were about to do. Think about it for a long long time.

If measured by weight, lingering rust flakes and bondo might have it as high as an X1/10.
(I'm assuming the weight as a fraction of an arbitrary number. X1/5>X1/9>X1/10, etc.)

Yeah, I don't think it was a fraction. Fiat people look at you funny if you call it an X Ninth.

Scirocco. 100x the Scirocco. If you don't go with the Scirocco I will sad.

I've always pronounced it X 1(brief pause)9. That being said, if it looks like a fraction, I will pretend it's a fraction at any time that's convenient.

...Scirroco...

100% Scirocco! They're fantastic little cars. The $1,500 price tag seems a little suspect though.

![]() 05/13/2014 at 12:57 |

My decision was between a Miata and an Alfa GTV6. I clearly did not heed my own advice.
