A (Hopefully) amphibious bicycle! The plan is to test it out tomorrow! I hope so much that it doesn't sink!

Make sure there's a video camera going. I want to see how this plays out. Also do you have any plans for forward propulsion when in the water?
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:30 |
|
Dude, you're gonna roll. Please film
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:32 |
|
right here, that's where the duct tape will fail :D please use a video camera :D
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:32 |

You might want to think of some way to go forward as well as maybe lock the steering so there is less of a chance of a roll over.

Fill 'em with water and see how long you can stay on it before dying...or getting hurt!
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:36 |

Haha its for a school "recycling" project, so for now it is just intended to float. Propulsion I thought of pudding paddles on the rims of the bike
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:36 |
|
Needs more duct tape.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:36 |

High center of gravity
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:37 |

Hahaha I need the Go Pro!!
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:37 |
|
more, yes, that's ALWAYS the answer
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:38 |
|
Remember your floaties. Chances are, you're gonna need 'em.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:39 |
|
That or more WD.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:39 |
|
1 pint of air will needed to be displaced for pound you want to float. you have 20 gallons there, so 160 pints... unless youre pretty skinny (i would be borderline myself) you'll need a littttttle more....
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:40 |
|
Hahaha the duct tape was my idea. But on the inside, there are pieces of wood that secure the barrels and the BMXs side tube things. Tape is just to make sure, and I will try and film it hahah.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:40 |
|
Damn! I didn't thought of body roll over. Tomorrow Ill wear a swimsuit, thanks for the tip, for now it just has to float with a human on it.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:40 |
|
ahh, on the "stunt pegs"
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:41 |
|
Are the bottles slipped over the pegs or simply taped to the ends? If the latter I have a feeling they will not stay attached as they are - I think the connection will at least bend, if the tape doesn't rip.
Good luck though, and as others have mentioned, please record it.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:41 |
|
Hahaha that is such a bad idea I might do it
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:42 |
|
Next steps: replace rear wheel with a paddle wheel and front wheel with a rudder. Shit should be fun good luck man!
also, it's a boat now so give it a name! you must!
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:43 |
|
You are going to be top heavy and flip the second you try to turn the bars. Figure out a way t fix them in place, and you will solve a little of that. Also, if you don't put some sort of paddle mechanism on the back you won't be going anywhere the current doesn't take you. On the lighter side, you could cristen it "Driftwood.'"
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:44 |

Got em
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:45 |
|
I am really skinny, haha so it HAS to work. If not, Im stealing ones from my grandmother.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:45 |

Stunt Pegs. You learn something new every day
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:47 |
|
They are attached with wooden sticks so you have to force the tanks in the pegs. The Duct tape is just for good measure, oh, and the use of duct tape in a DIY is MANDATORY
Haha I need to find a waterproof camera ASAP
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:48 |
|
Hahah for now, I just want it to float, but propulsion and direction which are kind of important (sarcasm) should go next.
Thanks! Haha in Mexico we have a tradition of naming them a womans name. So, obviously I'm naming it after my Girlfriends name, Malú, or Maria. But an Oppo name is still in the brainstorming stage
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:49 |
|
Maybe run a bungie cord through the front wheel and tension it to the frame. That will help to keep it on center and still allow you to turn the bars if needed.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:50 |
|
Thanks for the tips, for now I just need it to float so it is ready to present on wednesday. Later on I will concentrate on propulsion and direction, as well as balance. I will keep Oppo Updated
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:50 |
|
Thanks! I will take it into consideration
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:51 |
|
seriously after doing math it could actually work, did you plug the jugs to prevent water from entering? and if you just taped two more jugs on behind the rear two, like one of those 4x6 gators you'd be golden ahhahaha
![]() 05/12/2014 at 22:51 |
|
I really, really, really, really, really hate to be such a naysayer, but
That thing will not float with a person on it. It will sink, or fall over, or both. Please at least get some video, though.
If it does, by some ridiculous stretch of physics, float, I suppose I will congratulate you as one of the pioneers of science and technology on the main oppo page.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:04 |
|
hahaha I thought about doing it later! I want this to be pretty liveable in water. All will be submitted to Oppo for sure
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:04 |
|
Well remember, if you are going to fail, be sure that you fail spectacularly!
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:05 |
|
'recycle' some caustic soda and galvanized nails to make hydrogen and make the bottles more buoyant.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:05 |
|
Hahah I get it, seeing it with only 4 drums of water I think it will barely carry its own weight, but this was something that had to be done for wednesday for a presentation. When I take my time to actually think about it, I will make it floatable and drivable on water.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:06 |
|
Im pretty sure the only bigger way to make this spectacular is to set fire before I try it out.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:07 |
|
I'm no scientist but that's not gonna work. Not enough surface area.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:08 |
|
Thats just a hole new level. This is still duct tape stage of expertise!
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:09 |
|
Well, we'll check it out tomorrow. If it doesn't work at least I had fun trying it out
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:09 |
|
If you can fasten four more water bottles to the end of the four tht are already on there, it will distribute the weight enough to keep you upright...probably. Like I said before though, don't turn the bars or you'll go over for sure.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:10 |
|
I'm okay with that idea.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:11 |
|
This looks like what happens when someone decides to smoke meth and re-create Ben-Hur.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 23:16 |
|
Well more power to ya.
![]() 05/13/2014 at 00:11 |
|
not sure if that's enough but good luck!
remember that if the rear is used to propel, it will likely cause a torque and you'll need more bouyancy in the back because of that.
![]() 05/13/2014 at 01:05 |
|
Not gonna work. But don't trust me, do an experiment and find out! And be sure to share the video to prove how it went.
![]() 05/13/2014 at 07:39 |
|
Thanks for the tip, for now, it has to float only.
![]() 05/13/2014 at 07:40 |

ooooor a creative ecology project!
![]() 05/13/2014 at 07:41 |
|
Good to know, thanks!
![]() 05/13/2014 at 07:43 |
|
Haha there are a lot of people who say it won't, which makes me a bit nervous, but it just might as well. I will try my best with the video.
![]() 05/13/2014 at 07:46 |

This is something I would do and I am crazy.........Maybe people whose names start with the letter V like to do weird stuff to bicycles.
![]() 05/13/2014 at 11:03 |

Hahah I once bought front lights, rear lights, improved seat, and speedometer/odometer for my bike to make it the closest thing I could to a car. It was impossible to install
![]() 05/13/2014 at 12:56 |

Same here.
