I might start a daily question post, of off the wall car related stuff if I can keep them interesting enough. We will see how this goes. Lol.
What is the fastest speed you have reached in a car?
Stories are welcome. Hope you guys enjoy this.

The dumbest thing I can recall is driving home one night (late, around 12am or 1am) and having a newish TT pull onto the highway next to me. I accelerate, they accelerate, etc. until we're both doing past double the 65mph speed limit. After I looked at my speedo I backed down and took my exit. It remains one of the single most stupid things I've ever done behind the wheel.
Semi-related story, my dad took my mom's Garmin GPS unit and, as a joke, turned it on and tossed it on his bike and proceeded to hit 143mph. The next time she checked her trip time and max speed she about shit a brick.

About 120mph in a Boxster.

120, in an '04 Mach 1 Mustang. It was on an empty road in the middle of nowhere at 10pm

Lol what car were you in?
![]() 05/12/2014 at 14:51 |

Damn lol that's damn fast for an accord. 195kmh is around 120 or something mph?

120 on the PA turnpike. But I hit 114 in a 45. Was driving a friend home. After I dropped him off and proceeded to drive back, I did 30.

That must've been an experience. I'm jealous of the viper. Never have been in one.

122 mph lol..seems so pedestrian

157, somewhere, in something. Fastest clocked 98 in a 35 but luckily I was on private property when they clocked me (I was going faster). He was shooting the opposite way and must have heard that Audi 5000 turbocharger screaming. Ah to be young and stupid again

I should post mine. I believe he fastest I have gone is 145mph in a e36 3 series, as a passenger. Going down a long straight highway. Some guy we were catching up to luckily put on his brakes to slow us down as there was highway patrol up ahead.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 14:55 |

That'd be some serious wind!

130 on my 370z. Just on an empty freeway (I mean empty, I was the only car the whole 15 mile ride), between exits there was no one since it was 3am. I just gave it a bit of gas and it flew, by the time I realized my speed I was approaching my exit so I simply let off the gas to slow down enough. What scared me the most was how little I could tell the speed. Yeah needless to say that was very dumb. No need to remind me of that

'02 330Ci. Stock it's limited to 155mph if I remember correctly, but a software upgrade took this limit off and bumped my redline a bit, although I'll never see any speeds past what I said in my first post.

thats about my top for a 35 as well. Stupid. But exhilarating

Never been in a Z. But that must be built solid!

I've been a passenger going 165* in a 996 cabriolet. Shit gets surreal at that speed.
I've piloted a 2004 Mustang GT at 145* more times than I will admit to. I'm glad I got that out of my system when I was younger.
Speed is addicting, especially when the car just wants to keep pulling you faster and faster.
I will say that I am thoroughly impressed that the damn mustang didn't decide we needed a dose of snap oversteer at that speed. It must have been that rear spoiler. . . . . . . . . . . .
*Both these events took place on a closed course under the supervision of profesionals or by trained profesionals. . . Please don't try anything you've read at home.

i did about that in a 95 explorer. Scary stuff. never again. I havn;t even done 2/3 that in my WRX although now i'm super paranoid about being pulled over for speeding.

They are! I own the Nismo version, so it felt even more solid since the aero pieces are supposed to add over 300lbs of down-force at 90mph. For once I will say I am glad I have a wing and front spoiler.

Funny story. The day before I hit 120 in PA I graduated HS. I went to a boarding school (live in MD) and my one graduation request to my mom was that I drive her car home by myself. After graduation she left with other family and I had to take my friend's brother home and I would stay the night at his house for his grad party the next day. Anyway. I'm sitting at a light telling him how you can tell it's a good car, (2009 328ic) by how planted it is going in a turn. Put it in sport and go on the ramp, which was a 270* loop. Went in too hot and the whole time the back end was out. Won't forget that one. Shocked us both.

110 because that's where the governor is. That's nothing I would ever do now that I've learned how stupid that is. However, going 110 isn't the dumbest thing I've done. The dumbest thing I've done is travel 61.15 miles in 37 minutes. Of those 61 miles there were 8 stop lights and 4 stop signs. Approximately 50miles was either 55mph country roads or 70mph highway. Regardless it is probably the dumbest thing I've ever done in a car. I did not run any red lights or ignore any stop signs. I still managed to average just under 100mph for the trip in a car limited to 110mph.
Edited to add: This was more than 15 years ago when I was a freshman in college.

With me driving, 120 mph in my Z on the back straight of High Plains Raceway. With someone else driving, north of 150 mph in a 911 Carrera of some sort, same place (fun, learned a lot from the ride-along).

As a driver I hit 118 in my mom's 300M. Now how do I remember 118? That is when it hits the speed limiter and starts to slow down. I thought I had broken my mom's car. I was not a smart teenager.

Legally, I've done an indicated 131MPH in my BMW at Roebling Road Raceway, and 124MPH GPS indicated in a B180 CDI on the A3 from Köln to the Dutch border.
Not so legally? I won't say, but it is faster.

I hit 125 in a '98 Camry V6, then the engine decided it was done being an engine. The noises of bits of engines being thrown around at 6000 RPM is gloriously horrifying.

Nice. I really like the Zs. I want one. But my car weighs 2800lbs right now and I don't want it to feel super heavy. My car has a spoiler and wing as well. No idea how much it helps though.

The fastest I've been was 190-200 km/h, in all my cars. They just stop there.

140 in a '74 Olds Cutlass (455 swap). You think those things are floaty at highway speeds... not even sure the front wheels were on the ground. Ah, to be young and dumb again.
![]() 05/18/2014 at 01:07 |

That IS stupid because a car governed at 110 is most likely a piece of shit with t rated tires (not meant to cruise at 95 on).
Tires are a key part of deciding how stupid it is to speed.

I used to drive pay turnpike a lot. Let's just say thank god they don't use Ez pass to issue tickets

110 in a Toyota Matrix, the thing felt like it was going to shake apart.

It was a pontiac grand am. The car would have easily done 130/140. Thinking about the car and the tires lets just say there was a bridge I went over that made me lift for a moment afterwards.

Originally it was 142 with windows up, aircon off, on a long downhill slope in New Mexico in my old Infiniti G35. But I moved to Germany so now its more common place. I got up to 150 on my GSXR 750 before I chickened out, and I regularly do 210kph on the autobahn in my work car. A diesel beater Ford Mondeo. Its amusing.
