Bought a garage a few weeks back and worked a house into the deal. Unfortunately in my infinite wisdom, I scratched the living daylights out of our hardwood floors while moving in. I figured, because racecar of course, I could get them out with a buffer and some aggressive cutting compound. Nope. It just made it more slippery, so now my dog hates me because he falls over everytime he walks over it

"That'll buff out"

Probably looking at a sand and refinish to remedy all the things.

I think I actually told my wife "that'll buff out" as I went to get my polisher. Unfortunately it made it look worse because now it just shines all over the place

Your dog slides all over the place, providing needed comic relief. I fail to see the issue.

This coming from a dog person.

Seconding Carl Levine: That will not buff out, but that will *sand* out. Possibly without removing *all* your finish, but I wouldn't promise anything.

It would be like trying to buff out a key gouge in your car's paint.

These are here to stay unless you refinish the floors. No, chances are you can't just fix one area and blend it. Sorry.

Our entire wood floor is like that thanks to our 90lb shepherd. Everytime he scratches himself the other foots nails dig into the finish, as he spins 90 degrees.

Try to think of it as adding character. We recently sold our house (closing first week of june). I was certain after the inpsection the buyers would want the whole thing sanded down and redone, but they didn't even mention it.

Could try the iron and wet towel trick, but short of just getting new flooring just call it "character"

There is actually an Oppo House group over on G+. They might have an idea.

It's silly that I have a random orbital polisher, but now need to buy a random orbital sander (the same thing, just with a vacuum attached to it, and sand paper instead of a pad) so I don't gunk up the internals of the polisher. That's my next line of work- buy the sander and have a go at it, then re-stain

Can rub a walnut across the scratch and the oils from the nuts will make them less noticeable. Without sanding it down and refinishing you will never get rid of the scratch, but you can try to make it less noticeable.

I have thought about getting some opti-coat and filling in the cracks, but I think my wife would frown upon spending that kind of dough

I can see how it's easy to look past and not even notice, especially if you're selling to first-time homeowners

As the owner of a dog with 2 bad ACLs, this is only funny for a short while.

Looks like I'm just going to polish the rest of the floor and do this for the rest of the week!

I think I'm going to sand it down and then put a small layer of epoxy over the entire floor to "dog-proof" it so I don't spend the rest of my being doing this
