So I had to follow a friend who religiously followed the speed limit. This was over 15 miles, ac on. I reset it right as I got on the highway. Who needs a Prius?

the new 328i gets 36 on the highway in eco-pro. #truefacts.

7 mpg? Son that's called HYPOmiling.

Sounds like you need new friends :)

Who needs a Prius?
Nobody, that's who.
My E39 M5 averaged 29mpg for a 450mi road trip... and I was doing 80mph most of the time.
![]() 05/11/2014 at 22:14 |

Does the e39 have overdrive? That's awesome though, guess I need an e39.

My old B8 S4 would get to about 36 to 38 mpg at 80 on flat land in 7th.... Middle finger out the window to every prius I passed!

He drives a versa... Being an m3 driver though, I take what I can get.

not bad. not bad at all.
![]() 05/11/2014 at 22:40 |

My record high is 94.8 mpg while going <5 MPH backing into a space. Not bad bmw, not bad.

This pleases me. e92 my mistress.

It feels like it never stops revving.

So coincidental that you posted this! Yesterday I did a 260 mile trip and averaged 25.0mpg with ac off, windows down, cruise set to 72. I almost took a picture but I figured no one would care. It was by far the highest mileage I've ever achieved. It was a full tank of Exxon 93. I think your car did a little better than mine because of 7th in the DCT. In 6th I was cranking just under 3k at 72.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 09:21 |
|
If I remember correctly, the last gear in 6mt and dct are both 1.0. I was only doing 55 though, and over a shorter distance then you. So I give you credit as a better hyper miler as I would have went insane without a couple of WOT runs in that distance.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 09:52 |

I let myself have one good WOT run. There's a pretty long bridge that is 3 lanes in each direction on this stretch of highway and it's a really fun place to stomp on it. I wasn't going to do it but then I saw a Jeep flying up in the left lane - clearly he was intending to do my usual trick. Well, the road was WIDE open in front of me and let's just say I cracked down into third and didn't let off until the end of 4. The Jeep did not pass. It was straight up Gandalf. Average dipped to 24.7 for a few miles, then went back up to 25.0. I was shocked.

Conclusion: you should drive backwards, at 5 mph, everywhere (if you want good fuel economy).
![]() 05/12/2014 at 11:47 |
|
Maybe I should drive with my windows open more often...
![]() 05/12/2014 at 11:50 |

No, I have less gears than you (6) and I think 6th is still pretty tall.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 12:06 |
|
I just checked, the e39 m5 6 th gear is .83. 5th in the e39 is the same as 7th in my m3. Dct is aggressively tuned through every gear. Still doesn't change the fact I need an e39 though.

That would do it.
It's been a great daily driver for me (though it will see more garage time soon), and decent examples go for $15-20K now days.

Oh, I always do around town, so I can hear the Dinan exhaust growl and pop. I don't put the windows down as much on the highway, but for short trips I do. I mainly had to do it for all 4 hours of this trip to stave off as many hangover symptoms as possible. I was headed back from my cousin's bachelor party at a lake house. T'was a bit rough.

I really need an exhaust.... I usually drive with my windows down around town too though.

You don't just need one, you NEEEEEEED one. Buy one used from m3post so you don't get totally raped on the price buying one at MSRP, which for any given muffler system is basically 2.5x more than it has any right to be. No matter which one you get, you'll wonder why you didn't bite the bullet and install one the same day you bought the car. That OEM unit weighs about 100 pounds and is criminally quiet. The Dinan (without a cat delete) is barely louder inside the car but the tone is totally different and from outside the car or at WOT it absolutely wails. I am toying with the idea of either high flow cats or a catless xpipe because I personally think the car should sound like a total beast. If each option weren't essentially $1,500, I'd have done it by now...but with track expenses this summer I have to keep things somewhat under control. Blah.

it's always fun to recalibrate the fuel consumption while flooring it because it gives you wild answers like that.
I think I'd go crazy if I had to drive 5 MPH everywhere
![]() 05/12/2014 at 15:49 |

I was thinking about picking up some type of "race" exhaust as I love loud exhaust. 3 grand is a high price to pay for a cat back though, and there is one problem with getting one off of m3post...

How in the world did you get banned!??
![]() 05/12/2014 at 20:46 |

One of the mods went on a rage fest and banned every person that replied to a certain thread. The thread was a complaint about admins banning everyone, and I replied that he (the complainer) was a dead man walking. All 7 people that replied to it were perm banned.

Wow, nice to know that they're hiring 15 year-olds as mods.

So jealous of "full tank of Exxon 93"...
![]() 05/22/2014 at 12:54 |

Ugh, me too. I'm back to using the BP right by my house. I don't have an Exxon or Shell anywhere near me. BONUS first-world burn : I own stock in XOM, but can't buy gas there. Fml.
![]() 05/22/2014 at 13:15 |
|
I don't think I can get 93 IN MY STATE (minus higher octane at the local track). Bonus first-world burn: I work for APA, and they only sell CNG. Don't see that conversion happening any time soon.

That blows. They're way too heavy-handed over there.
![]() 05/22/2014 at 13:50 |

I just imagined your M3 with a CNG municipal bus engine/drivertrain. PULL THE CORD I NEED TO GET OFF THIS NIGHTMARE.

They're pretty profit driven. Complain about a mod or vender and they ban you, even if you're a helpful member. Yet they let trolls roam free.
