Timing my Trans Ams engine tomorrow. I've never used the tach/dwell/other thing part. Any idea what that's for or how to use it?

Sun Inductive or Seductive?

the dwell is for setting the distributor points correctly. You connect one lead to the point and the other to ground.

I probably don't have to worry about than then?

Not if your car has electronic ignition. I'm assuming that Emma came with HEI from the factory.

probably not, I've never needed to use one but I've watched Dad use one a couple of times. I think it has to read between + or - 1 and you fiddle with the points until they do?
You can use the tach part of it to help tune your carbs though. Tune as usual but you don't need someone sitting in the car holding the revs with the throttle. Same deal, should read the revs off the dizzy.

you should at least check the dwell to make sure its within spec. I know a small block chevy runs best at a range of 28-32 on a dwell meter. my grandpa always sets his motors at 30

She did but my 400 didn't, but I did a distributor swap to take care of that issue.

My dad has three of them.
me"why did you pick up another one at a tag sale."
him " it was only 10 bucks and on day you'll be thankful, because one day there won't be any with computers and......(rant rant)"

I've learned not to argue when my grandfather buys new fancy tools because that just means his old (quality) stuff goes to my dad and I

True. Half the time his stuff falls into the "free category" of "yeah such and such was moving and didn't want it anymore" "does it work?" "I don't know I didn't think to ask"
aka now someone else gets to carry it to the dump.
