I've never followed Nascar news or Earnhardt. What's DEI and what's the story behind this?

Had to look it up myself. Dale Earnhardt Incorporated (DEI) doesn't have anything to do with NASCAR races anymore.

Dale Earnhardt Inc. It was his dad's company he lost in a custody battle with his step mom. I think.

Dale Earnhardt Incorporated. It was started in the 80's by Earnhardt and he ran it with his wife until he died. Though he never raced for that team, Jr. did. Around '06 or '07 Jr. wanted to gain a controlling interest in DEI so he could make the decisions he thought were needed to win, as the team had none the previous season. Earnhardt's wife (Jr.'s step mom) said no, and publicly questioned his commitment to racing. They split, and DEI failed in a few years through a few mergers.
As far as I know, DEI now only exists to hawk the dead Earnhardt's legacy.

Kinda like the Yoko Ono of Nascar.

Makes ya wonder though. What if he got what he wanted? Because Jr Motorsports certainly isn't hurting for success.

Theresa isn't the evil bitch people make her out to be. She couldn't be if Sr thought as much of her as he did. People inside the sport knew her as a good business woman, and DEI was as much her company as anyone's. She ran the 9-5 while Sr was off racing, since the 80's. Contrary to the article, Sr did race for DEI in the Busch series in the 90's, before Jeff Green, Steve Park, and Dale Jr. drove their 3 car. Dale's death caused the end of DEI, not Theresa. They all held it together as long as they could, but it was a ship without a rudder. I'm thankful to Theresa for at least keeping the Dale Earnhardt Foundation, and the souvenir sales going for those of us that want to #continuethelegend
