How old are you? It's surprising that you can't insure something like this, especially since a car that old only needs basic insurance.

I had looked at Barchetta's, but I think you want to go for a leather interior, they're much nicer. Also, damn you brits for having so cheap second hand cars! In Belgium, a nice Barchetta can't be had under 5 000€!

And if you're living in the UK, you have to buy a japanese import! We can't register them over here so they're kind of a forbidden fruit! FTO's, RX-7's, and all the likes.

It's LHD..that would be why it costs more on Insurance And why it is also cheaper..Britain is RHD.So this is less desirable for that reason.

And I gues road tax per year is probably about 1/5 of the price Per year..Depending on what year this car is.I guess you are looking at about £400 per year road tax.

I'm only 19 so insurance is extremely high. Best quote on the barchetta was in the thousands. Barchetta's are really rare here this is the first I've seen for sale in my area.

But yeah our used car prices are great, when my insurance comes down I'll start buying this sort of stuff a lot.

Yeah, I've only found one RHD Barchetta and it's nowhere as interesting.. But UK is supposed to be the place of cheap Miata's, like this !

And 400£ road tax per year is something one can live with.. I was looking at RX-8's here (Belgium...) and the taxes the Belgians have to pay are just stupid.. Saw a nice 192hp 2007 example with 60 000 miles, very clean. 5 500€.

The problem? Registration is 4 300€, + 600€ per year the next years.

Well you know what they say.. If you don't need a car, just don't buy one and get registered on your parent's car so that the rates come down.

If you do need a car, buy something cheap and simple for the time being, don't do anything on it, and save your money something a few years down the road.

Damn that registration cost is insane. Road tax is based on emissions, I'd estimate the Barchetta would be less than £300 a year. A more modern car the same size might be able to get closer to £200 due to being a bit cleaner running.

Registering on parent's cars doesn't work any more, they just charge what they'd charge me alone anyways. I'm looking at diesel hatchbacks mostly at the moment, I could get a supermini and save a bit more but I couldn't bear a 50hp box for more than ten minutes.

Those wheels killed it for me. Otherwise, it looks nice.

A trip to a junkyard and £200 later you could have some nice enough fiat wheels on useable tires so that wouldn't bother me. I just love the lines of the car in that red.

Wow..That's a big chunk of money to register a car..Is that because it is an import?? Or is that normal?? Do you have to pay that just to change ownership? I wonder what Country is most expensive in Europe for car ownership?

If I was Belgian..I'd ride a bike or take the Bus..Handing over that sort of money to the Govt..is awful.

This in money you're supposed to pay for every ownership change (even if daddy gives his car to his son..), regardless of the car being domestic or an import. Any "special" that changes hands 3-4 times ends up earning the government more money than to the manufacturer.

There's a displacement tax (x2 for rotary engines), a power tax, and a CO2 tax, which, at 2 500€, is the real problem here.

A GT-86 will cost you 3 000€ in registration tax, where a similarly priced diesel Hyundai SUV will cost you 300€ to register because it emits less CO2 (on paper...) and is less powerful. They don't look at particulates and NOx emissions at all... And they don't look at vehicle weight or size either. Completely idiotic.

The stupid thing is that since this clearly privileges diesel engines, the main "achievement" of this is that it made Belgium the European country with the highest particulate pollution level. Any person here buys diesel cars, even for 5 000 miles per year.

Y U diesel? Can't you get a first-gen Mini One with the 90hp engine at least? Those are supposed to be fun rides.

Kinja'd!!! Alex87f > Twingo Tamer - About to descend into project car hell.

Yeah, it's mostly linked to a CO2-based tax. Any recent car does way better since manufacturers learned how to "cheat" CO2 emissions to lower vehicle taxes.

Na I don't like Mini's really. I do like the torque and economy of a diesel, just a lot better value in my situation.

Yeah... I'm not a big fan diesels, especially in smaller cars.. And if you don't drive that much they often end up being costlier than petrols.

I've had one and the short torque surge quickly gets old, especially since it doesn't really help the handling.

I'm looking at Focus Estate with the 1.8 tdci so not exactly a small car. Much better value than getting the 1.6 petrol. I agree with you on the smaller cars with diesels though, when I see clios with small diesel engines I wonder what sort of benefit they're getting.
