Oh man... I'm sorry to hear that. It's like a digital kick in the balls when you lose your work. But in my experience, once it stops responding it doesn't start again. You lost it the second the program froze.

This situation is the only situation where one of these posters LITERALLY makes sense.

I've had it unfreeze like 80% of the time if I just let it sit. But windows doesn't have patience it seems.

I was trying to figure out what the hell kind of file I needed to save it. This program gives you like 20 kinds to save it as.

That sucks, I've had people crying to me because of windows' poor stability. Gotta save often.

Windows rage quits itself.

That's what I kept saving it as, but it was only saving a small chunk of the total picture. I think I've figured out why now, just a little too late.

Mnyeah, I know how it feels. I also know that most of the time, it's the users own fault. I see this stuff daily at my faculty - people ask the software to do something that the hardware will have a hard time dealing with. When it starts freezing they manically start clicking and mashing the keyboard and it never helps.

Anyway, unless you change your workflow a bit, this will keep happening. If you want, we can figure out a solution.

Please provide the following info, where possible:

- Computer specs (roughly)
- Windows version
- Software used

- Approximate size of file and resolution of drawing

- Any other odd happenings that influenced the crash

I stalked you a bit and I assume you're using Inkscape? Good on you, lovely software, if a tad unstable at times. I use it all the time.

Tip: Always save in .svg format. You can still export and do all the other stuff later when you're done. I usually save in increments, so I'll have a project folder and inside it 001.svg, 002.svg, you get the idea.

Tip #2: Inkscape, like many open source applications, can be a bit unstable, yes. But! These often come with sweet crash recovery. Check the folder where you saved the files for other files in the same format with mangled names. Something like: orignal_filename-month-day-year-timestamp.svg (with actual data in there, yeah?)

7/10 times I was able to recover and 2/10 times I had a save from 3 minutes ago. That remaining one time I was as pissed as you are, but I knew it was my fault. You'll soon learn to make an incremental save BEFORE attempting any process that might eat up you system resources, like bitmap tracing a multi-megapix photo or something crazy like that.

Good luck and don't give up!

I think I'm actually okay with it crashing now, because version 2.0 of the M235i is coming together and looks a helluva lot better than the one that I lost. And I'm saving now, of corse.

But I'll have to see if I can dig up the old one in those files you said to look in.

It was running perfectly fine up until I went to export the file, and I'm doing this on a computer that's like 50% new parts and 50% seven year old parts. I should've known a crash was inevitable.

Nah, just me trying to do this on a 7 year old desktop instead of my 1 year old laptop
