For BMW, on sale now, I think it's the Z4, classic proportions of a long hood and short trunk, good body lines, and it has some call backs to the 507. What do you think?

I would say the z4 as well. Great looking car, and it looks infinitely better than the previous generation. That being said, having driven one, I was not all that impressed by the driving dynamics.
I also think the new M6 and M6 gran coupe look excellent.

You can't have a discussion on BMWs without me.
There are so many and it depends really what area. If you are talking 80s era of boxification then my bet is for E30 M3. Why, 'cause box flares.
But lets say you when outside of E30 vs E34, well then you step into the alpinas and uber cars then its:
Not technically BMW design but still cool
I also like the new M5
I am inclined as a fan boy to love everything, even the bangle era is necessary as the flame surfacing was required to get the M6 to look what it does now and the 2 series to be what it is. I love the E30, E34 a lot but man do I love BMWs style its consistent and builds slowly and even though it seems subtle it is actually ground breaking, especially Bangle.

Take the E85/E86 dynamics and put an E89 body on it, and you'd have the perfect Z4.
Although I still maintain that the retractable hardtop is silly, and the better looking one is the E86 Coupe.

We can dream, can't we? My dad sounds pretty sure about the Z4. It's a good car, it's just that it weighs as much as the M235i and has less HP. I feel as if he can do so much better.
Also, the dealers told my dad that demand for the M235 is way up, so they're getting really expensive.

But my all time fav from bmw are E90 2009+. I always thought the design was so right, the headlights with angel eyes and LED turn signals are one of the sexiest i've ever seen (on a mainstream car). Hey does your Dad like to be frugal?
Cause then Boxster/Cayman (either engine) is the ONLY choice.
I drove the 997 all weekend on like 3 gallons of gas. It was amazing.
Porsche seriously used magic. Their DFI engines make the most out of a tiny bit of gas. It's literally unbelievable. The current Boxster/Caymans are even moar efficient than my 997.
Brian Silvestro
> Manuél Ferrari
05/12/2014 at 12:15 | 0 |
Porsche easily makes the best 6 cylinder engine on the market. They've been doing that for so long. I'm betting he's going to get the Boxster since he loves Porsche and it's a convertible.
Manuél Ferrari
> Brian Silvestro
05/12/2014 at 13:43 | 0 |
It does seem like the best option for him then. He loves Porsche, wants a cabrio, and the Boxster comes in two different price points.
The Porsche flat sixes are very good engines. They had their share of issues when moving from air cooled to water cooled. But by now the water cooled engines are mature and definitely some of the best N/A six cylinders on the market.
Actually come to think of it Porsche is making some of the best N/A engines on the market period.
Brian Silvestro
> Manuél Ferrari

Manuél Ferrari
> Brian Silvestro
05/12/2014 at 13:53 | 0 |
And Porsche has totally caught up to Ferrari when it comes to the super high-output per liter N/A engines. It used to be that only Ferrari made engines that were so high strung that they occasionally exploded. But not anymore, the silly little Porsches self combust too now!
Brian Silvestro

I know this sounds crazy but I think it's a good thing that that the new GT3 tried to BBQ its owners.
If you don't have at least a few of the first high-performance cars that rolled out of the factory catch fire then you're not trying hard enough!
Everyone freaked out when some of the early 458s caught fire. But Ferrari issued a recall and it doesn't seem to happen as much anymore. Now all that most people talk about is how sublime dat V8 is and how fun the 458 is to drive.
I suspect the same will happen with the GT3. In a few years all people will talk about is how the GT3 and upcoming GT3 RS are stacking up wins at track days.
Brian Silvestro
> Manuél Ferrari
05/12/2014 at 14:17 | 0 |
Yep. The fire incident will fade into the background. They really went all out on the GT3, and I agree that it catching fire shows how good they did.
Manuél Ferrari
> Brian Silvestro
05/12/2014 at 14:36 | 0 |
I haven't checked to see how the 991 GT3 does around famous tracks vs the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0. Have you?
If the 991 GT3 isn't faster around the Ring I bet the 991 GT3 RS will be. Which would really piss off those people that spent an arm and a leg on the 4.0, lol.
Brian Silvestro
> Manuél Ferrari
05/12/2014 at 14:40 | 0 |
No I haven't checked, but now I'm curious. I bet it does thanks to the absurd engine and PDK though.
Manuél Ferrari
> Brian Silvestro
05/12/2014 at 15:01 | 0 |
And I think it's a little lighter too, despite the car being bigger and PDK being heavier than stick. The chassis itself is lighter so the car might be lighter despite having more toys.
The thing that is always tough about buying a special edition such as the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 or 458 Speciale (especially brand new) is that these cars are made at the end of the base model's run. And the base model's replacement is usually as good or nearly as good as the special edition. The 458 was able to match or beat the F430 Scud on track and the 991 GT3 or 991 GT3 RS will probably beat the 4.0.
I really wish that the special editions came out sooner. I know that for the car company the whole point of the special editions are to make some extra profit when the base model is long in the tooth. And I know that they say they need time to develop the special editions. But do they really need that much time? And wouldn't they make the same (or more) profit if they launched the special edition cars a couple years sooner but sold less of them per year?
Imagine if the 458 Speciale had launched even a year sooner. Ferrari could have produced the same exact number of cars but just sold less per year. They could have set the MSRP higher because there would be more demand.
Brian Silvestro
> Manuél Ferrari
05/12/2014 at 15:11 | 0 |
I don't think it's that they won't, I think it's that they can't. They have to develop a base car first to perfect, and that take a lot of time and fine tuning.
Manuél Ferrari
> Brian Silvestro
05/12/2014 at 15:16 | 0 |
But computers! Surely with modern tech they can speed up the process just a little bit.
The tradition has been that Ferrari launches the special edition 2 model years before the new car. And Porsche normally does something similar.
If they could shave just one year off the development that would be cool. I bet a lot of rich buyers who want the special edition but don't want to get bested by the next car would order it as soon as it launches instead of waiting for the new model. A lot of people on FChat discussed this when the 458 S launched and decided to wait for the new car.

Manuél Ferrari

05/12/2014 at 15:27 | 0 |
I had an idea over the weekend to run by you.
Do you think it would be possible for me to rent out supercars simply to help subsidize my car addiction, not really to turn a profit?
I wonder if it would be possible to start an LLC without having a dedicated office space. I could just have mail go to my office or a PO Box.
I could buy a car and make it an asset of the LLC. I could advertise on Yelp, Oppo, etc. and use an online reservation tool so people can see what days the car is free. If there is a specific weekend when I really want to have the car to use myself then I just block those days in the reservation tool.
If I just did this with one car as a side gig then I could probably manage everything myself and not need to hire an employee. There are cheap solutions now for taking credit card payments and for accounting.
As long as the revenue I collect outpaces the depreciation caused by the miles that people put on the car then I come out ahead financially.
Crazy idea or potentially good way to make the car addition a bit less expensive?
The really cool thing is that if it goes well then I could get a new exotic car every 4-5 years. It would make business sense to always have a current model since people will be more likely to want to lease a current model and they'll pay more for it. Plus always having the current model will ensure the car is always under warranty. And with Ferrari's free maintenance program their cars would make the most sense since they'll pay for all maintenance and consumables other than tires.

Also the metal floors, carbon fiber doors and sport buckets will be less prone to being damaged by doge than carpets and leather clad doors and seats. I love all the leather in the regular models but dat leather can be scratched by doge. I take him around everywhere and could feel comfortable doing so in a Scud or Speciale

Hahaha I can already see him riding around in a Scuderia, he'll love it!

Haha it will be hilarious. I would need to bring one of his beds with me so that he'll have somewhere soft to sit on the passenger floor. It's not safe for him on the passenger seat because of how I drive.
He would HATE race mode since the shifts would be so violent. But he'd be fine with sport mode as long as I wasn't flooring it all the time and causing the car to shift hard.
