Hey Oppo; so I am planning to go to the PPIHC this year. I've lived in Colorado for I don't know how many years now and never done it. I live in Colorado Springs now, so I have zero excuse not to do it.
Right now I am trying to plan the event with some friends. I want to camp out up there so I can manage to get a good view. Anyone know the intricacies of this? I want to make sure I can get a spot way up the mountain (above tree line) so I can get a good vantage point of the hairpins.
If anyone has any good tips/advice, it is very welcome.
Thanks!

Let me get this right. . . you have lived in Colorado, and have never gone to the hillclimb? WHY!?!?!?

Some nice places to see hair pins are George's Corner and Double Cut. I haven't camped up there yet, but over the past 7 years those two corners are the best for some sideways action. I'm planning on entering next year since i've drive that route nearly everyday and I know it like the back of my hand.

Well to be fair, the last few years that I have been out of college, I have always been out of the country for work during the PPIHC... other than that i don't have an excuse... :(

Nice! So how do people get up the mountain before the race? Is there a shuttle or something?
Also when do you think the road will be open to the top? Tried to drive up there today and apparently the last 8 miles are still closed or something.

What I've been doing was go up early in the morning (like 3am early) and park off to the side since it's higher up. If your near the base most just park and hike up. I don't actually know why it's closed or when it'll open up, but its probably just clean up around the roads and fixing up the cracks.

Ok cool. That's what I was thinking I would have to do. The info says the gates open at 4am for people to go in, I assume that's when you can drive up? And if there is open space, you can just park on the side of the road? Or are there designated parking areas? In videos you always see random cars parked on the side of the road, but I figured the race officials would only let you park in certain areas.

most of the time people will just park off to the sides so long as your car isn't in the way or at a cautioned area (corners and drop offs) then you r pretty much free to park where ever. Most don't go too far from the roads unless they have a jeep or similar "off-road" vehicle. From the times i've gone a lot of people will park at the bottom and walk to were ever their going to be at. What i've been doing is park relatively close to were i want to be and just walk.

Like someone said, get in line at like 2 or 3 and sleep until the gates open. I went all the way to the top (I believe its called like Devil's point or something) and there was a cool overhang you can sit and watch a lot of corners from, including a hair pin right under you that I ended up hanging out on and letting monster cars come at me before late braking. That area is also where there are no guard rails, and I watched a Pontiac Solstice go off the side of the cliff and tumble about 100 yards down the mountain. That was insane (guy was ok though).

No problem man i just hope you have a good time. I'm hoping to make it up there this year so long as life goes to plan. Hit me up and we could hang out up there...

Awesome. That's going to be the plan then. I was going to try and park up high then hike to a good vantage point.
Those crashes are crazy, it's amazing no one died last year (or in recent years).

Sounds good. I'll make another post on Oppo when the race comes and we can have a jalop party up there.

I actually know the guy that went off last year. He is a big racer here in Texas. The pix he is posting of the new cage they are putting in the EVO are pretty crazy. And the guy I was with at the hill climb ended up hiking up higher as well. I, on the other hand, had a cooler of beer and a seat, so I stayed put pretty much. Also cool story bro: I met Caswell on the hair pin and talked with him a while.

Haha awesome. And yes that was a cool story.
Well I will be having my own cooler of beer as well. Maybe we can have some sort of Jalop-meet at the hill climb.

I do want to go again. Another cool story is I went the last year there was still any dirt IIRC. I won't make it this year though. It is definitely something every motorsports fan should do.

Yeah I'm sad I won't be able to see it with the dirt, but they can make some slightly more insane car for the unlimited class now.

Well I got my tickets already. Looks like there will be a bunch of Jalops going. Hopefully we can all coordinate and have a Jalop rally point. I say you should just buy tickets anyways and make yourself go, call in a sick day ;)

Nice, I'm camping in Ski Run and will probably go watch around cove creek. I am thinking a Jalop spot should be there...
