Was Saturn so bad? I mean they made boring cars for the most part, but my first car was a 2004 Saturn ion (a lot like this one)
Question for y'all is what was your favorite and least of the saturns. I loved the sky redline (I don't fit tho) so I think il just say my ion was the best, and worst was the mini van they made, the relay
although it did have a tv for the kiddos standard
For a company named after a rocket ship, they weren't very exciting cars; but it's still a brand I miss seeing dealers for

My first car was a 1999 SL2. Great for my 50-mile commute, horrible for power. I literally had to turn off the AC to get up some hills.

Yes, they were that bad .

L series Saturn's are quite solid from experience. Not surprising, given that they're Opels.

Well, technically they didn't make the Relay so there is that.
But no, Saturn didn't make any particularly bad cars. They weren't anything to write home about, but they got you from A to B without major issue. Plus they were made out of plastic so door dings were not a thing either.
I'll always have a soft spot for the original S wagon. Gutless, boring, but relentlessly usable.

that's what I call character; they never did have power, which ment you kept your foot down most of the time, which was a blast for a 16/17 year old

I thought the Opel connection came later?

I agreed with this so much; I feel like saturn was a older dog, it wasn't gonna jump up and run around and impress ya, but was always there when ya needed it.

Nope; the L series was directly based off Opel architecture. Fun fact: It's the same platform as the NG900.

Those early Saturns were some of the most hit and miss cars in the history of ever I think. There's people who have gone 250k+ in them without an issue. Then there's the people who have had to change the transmission in the first 20k. Sadly, he got a bad one. The later ones are reliable though, or at least ours has been.

We used to have an '03 Ion.
Tough as nails. Never owed us any favors.
3 incidents, never totaled once.
First was a low speed run in with an elderly woman in a Buick Century somewhere between 2004 and 2006, can't exactly remember when.
Second one, mid 90's Cadillac DeVille pushed a cart into the grille in a Walmart parking lot, that was some time in 2008, if I recall properly.
Last one was a big one in 2009. Deer ran out during the night and broadsided the car.
Right front fender shattered, very little structural damage...still not totaled.
Traded it in for a brand new Civic Coupe in '10.
Next owner likely saw all the incidents in it's Carfax, but hopefully it's in good hands.

My wife's first new car was a 2000 SL2. She bought it very shortly after we met. Although a bit small it was very reliable, needing a minimum of maintenance. Sold it in 2008 with 100K on it for $3000 and only because our family was outgrowing the car. As far as I know it was basically perfect. No rust, front pads, all fluids regularly changed. Having a drain plug and spin on transmission filter is a great idea BTW. Too bad they went to shared GM drivetrains. Their stuff was great. I still see them on the road from time to time, looking exactly the same. Great stuff.
On the other hand, the Vue with it's leaking sunroof was horrible. (a friend's car) Endless issues with it. But that was really just a rebadge, so I prefer to think of it as a post-saturn car.

I like everything about them except those damn gauges. I especially like the Redline QuadCoupe.

We had a 2000 SL2 with the twin-cam motor. It didn't have a problem with the hills unless the car was full of passengers!

My dad leased a loaded black L series. Don't remember which exact one, I liked that car, but boy am I glad he leased it. Because stuck with a car that old would be awful!

The L was the bare bones, LS1 was the slightly nicer 4 banger, and the LS2 was the V6. My brother owns an LS1. I keep telling him since the drive train uses the same mount setup (same platform) as the contemporary Saab 9-5, he should put in a turbo V6. (If auto) it'd be like a dozen bolts away - trans, front suspension, engine, even radiator are all on an easily detachable subframe.

No they're not that bad. They require as much maintenance as any 90/2000's Jap commuter car. My SL got 40+ mpg with over 130k miles and a neglected wheel hub. The motto is, if they sip gas they chug oil and vice versa.

Worst Saturn: The VUE w/ CVT transmission. The belt only lasted 50-60k before snapping, rendering the vehicle useless, and necessitating a complete tranny replacement.
Search AutoTrader for VUEs and you'll find bucketloads for a few grand, ran like new when parked, needs new transmission.

My 1993 SL was pretty damn reliable. I never thought I'd say it, but I miss her for that. Great fuel mileage. Mostly didn't rust.

Best (or at least my favorite)
Worst:
My neighbors have had three of these now... first one's engine seized up, and the neighbors claim that had just changed the oil (maybe it was at Jiffy Lube and the plug wasn't fitted tight enough or something), the second one had a suspension failure and now they've gotten a third one that squeals like a pig... go figure. Maybe there's something I don't see that's great and keeps them coming back for more...

Speaking as someone who has owned a few saturns, the best Saturn was one that didn't have a Saturn engine at all -the Saturn VUE with the Honda 3.5 V6 in it. For a rubbermaid little piece of junk SUV, that thing moved, and for the low $20's, you got the AWD version w/ the V6. It had 250 hp and did 0-60 in the mid 7's with AWD. For the mid 2000's in a cheap crossover SUV that was impressive.
