After spending three winters on the east coast, my rust free California truck is starting to show a little rust on the frame and axles. I decided to go with the kitchen sink approach and nip this in the bud.
Luckily since its a land cruiser and leaks all sorts of oil from the engine I only have to worry and the back 2/3's of the truck!

One of the many things I miss about Arizona, essentially 0% chance of rust. lol

Yes, living in the desert has its positives, but...

I'm going to do this to my Tacoma frame this summer. 100% rust free when I bought it, now it has surface rust everywhere on the frame.
Why do I live here again?

Good luck with that. You are just mildly postponing the inevitable.

Are the above products everything you are using to do this?

From what I understand constant application throughout the winter is the key. I think if I keep enough oil on her throughout the winter I should be able to completely stop the rusting process.

That is correct.

Oil maybe, but that other stuff? :(
It's basically impossible to winter DD anything around here and have it survive. What year is your FJ?

I was also going to apply used motor oil throughout the winter with one of those pump pesticide spray deals. The natural engine oil on the front third of the truck has worked perfectly. Its a 93 FJ80.

Whats the plan? Im in the same boat, my rear axle looks like its in need. The front looks brand new of course, but that will change since it no longer leaks...at all.

POR15 right over the rust, then topcoat it for UV protection. The R-O stuff is decent but not great.

So spray and scrub with prep and etch to get all the minor rust off. Then hit everything with rust reformer. Then overcoat with self etching primer. Then add the AMSOIL protectant over the top. I figure that will have to be reapplied 1-2 times during the winter. I was also thinking about using used motor oil in one of the pump pesticide sprayers during the winter for easy reapplication.

It's nowhere need bad enough to need POR15 that's why im using the light duty stuff. I should be able to get 95% of the surface rust off with the prep etch and the HD oil potectant should keep it from coming back.

Gotcha! Good luck with it.
