I would love a tow vehicle for getting to/from the track. Run-what-you-brung makes getting home more of a concern than is sometimes comfortable. The beautiful pics from other posters made me do a little searching. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! has so much going for it.

$10k, and out you go. Multifuel engine, 6x6 drive. A new F150 starts at about $24k, the Super Duty line starts at $31k. I'll take the green machine all day long.
But then, I drove a '78 2-seater to work today, including day care drop off. Took about a half hour to get the car seat in with the belt and locking clip. Worth it for the chorus of "Car! Car! Go! Gooooooo!" from the seat next to me, and the smile/thumbs up from the classic Dart driver next to me in traffic.

10k?!?!?! . My buddy just picked up a 1991 5-ton with an Allison Trans and 8.3L Cummins, CTIS, ABS, minty fresh, 19k miles for $4800 from a government liquidation...

check your state laws. You might need a CDL to drive one of those.

The 70's ones seem to go for a bit more. Some sort of nostalgia thing, seems like. I know several people who have bought theirs for about what your friend did from various liquidators. Varying degrees of success with how much work they actually need, but always better than a new Ferd/Doge/Shovey. I'd pay more for a private party seller who really had it in good shape. Those liquidator folks are... questionable people.
In any case, the real cost to me would be about $750k, because I'd need a new house.

How does one find something like that?

Way ahead of you. CO doesn't require it. Or emissions on it, either.

I've been looking to get one of these. I'd prefer to get a M35 to the newer 5 tons because it has a manual transmission. Nothing like feeling like a real big rig driver!

Do owners in your area end up keeping the multifuel motor, or swapping? Everyone here (Front Range CO) seems to end up swapping them out to a configuration similar to your friend with 8.3L. Seems at least as much due to our highways, long stretches of high limits, big passes. Maybe the multis can't keep up? Always wondered.

My neighbor started with basically this truck (though in much worse shape), then swapped to a similar config as mentioned by macanamera, and then moved that, with the cab, to a 5 ton frame with a single rear axle. I think the legality is questionable, but until/if he gets caught it's no real harm, I suppose. It's his license at risk, anyway (the 2.5 are non-CDL here, the 5T however...). I also would like to stay with the manual. I learned 2T, 5T, and 10T (I was CDL legal then, different state and I let it lapse a long time ago) dumps and water trucks, all manual. Fun job, landscaping. Too bad the money was terrible. I actually found the manual easier to drive. To me, it felt like the trucks were much more controllable and predictable.

govliquidation.com, govdeals.com, govsales.com, etc. Just search "government liquidation sites". The better ones let you put watch notices on, same as you do for airfare.

Yeah I can't imagine many highway patrol would know the difference between the 2.5 and 5 ton mil surplus trucks. Plus most would just think it's plain cool.

I don't think the 8.3 is multifuel...It's just a diesel. I'm not sure about others swapping.

You did. You self promoting whore lol. I got a honorable mention and was left out on the other one. I think you, Ash and I are a step above. Can you post to Oppo or any other blogs? I can promote a request to make you an author. I can post to Travel, brewpub and Oppo. If you want, make a message on another comment and I'll promote to wherever you want to make articles on. #undergroundmafia

I can post to Oppo, yeah...I'm not sure I care too much about other blogs. But, idk, Ill check it out. I post to Oppo, sometimes frequently, sometimes infrequently. I've been considering some longer pieces. I'll drink lots of beer over the weekend and think about. And yeah, you and Ash are definitely great...quality stuff.

Damn electric carts. Where's Elon? The seedy underbelly indeed. I wrote a piece on Korea for travel.kinja.com. It wasn't my best work :-/

I'd love to get a truck like that and make a custom built camper for the back.

I was just thinking about that over lunch, but I wonder if it wouldn't end up being so tall as to be a pain as far as overpasses are concerned?

So many possibilities! I was thinking flat bed for DIY home crap (5 yards of mulch? dump it on!), and dockable modules, like a rack for two full sets of wheels and tires, a 50 gallon tank and crank pump for 110 octane gas, and a portable welding rig. Then, an enclosed trailer for the car, and enough room for a bunk, a table, and a kitchenette, maybe a small bathroom... and that's when i have to start looking at realtor.com.

I don't know. Carting was a blast. I was blue flagged and legitimately passed them again. Second out of 12 while drunk isn't bad. I mean.....what?

They were electric carts. I was riding the edge the whole time. The marshal was surprised I hit all of the apexes.
