Hey Oppo, the wife and I are planning a little weekend trip up to Minneapolis in the fall and I could use some suggestions for lodging. We're looking for a slightly upscale place to stay, but not too expensive (~$150/night). Any ideas?

Also, we're planning on heading over to MSP one day to do a little plane spotting so any suggestions on good places to spot from would be appreciated.

Upscale and inexpensive don't go together in the same sentence. ;) There are lots of good places to stay in Minneapolis. I personally prefer downtown, but it's not as cheap as staying in Bloomington, which is where the Mall Of America is, which I suggest avoiding at all costs.

Actually, if you're there to go plane spotting, Bloomington is a good place to stay as you can see planes from the area quite easily. Hotels by the mall are pretty cheap, so you should be able to find something in your price range easily.

Stay downtown. Go to the Graves 601. They have a nice bar there called Bradstreet that makes bomb-diggity beverages. Being that it is so far out, you might be able to get good rates. Otherwise, the Doubletree is super nice too. It is next to a place called Brit's pub that is the local Irish, British haunt. Great food and if you go, get the Scotch eggs. Trust.

Brit's Pub rules. They also have Strongbow cider on tap.

If you want to try a bit more upscale you could try the Hotel Ivy. I think it can be had in the price range you are looking for.

Graves 601 is really central (walking distance) to all the bars, theatres, clubs and sports if you want to have fun at night.
