So I'm in the market for a new car, not necessarily an urgent thing, but something I want to accomplish before I graduate college and move on to law school next summer.
I'm looking for manual, RWD or AWD wagon or hatchback (but preferably wagon). I've got a budget somewhere around 7 or 8k. Fellow opponaut Reigntastic mentioned a 5 or 3 series touring.
Looking into it I found the e46 323it, any bmw enthusiasts know if this is a good idea, can I find a decent one in my price range.
Or basically anyone want to mention anything (bmw or otherwise) that fits my criteria that you think is better?

If you could find a not beat up WRX wagon. I'd go for that. Love those things. Should be in the price range too. What tier law school you going to go to?

I've had people mention that, what year and spec are good to look for?
Also, I think it would be awesome to get one cause I have the "lock me mama like a wagon wheel" blip shift shirt with the volvo wagon on it.

I personally would love a wrx wagon, but I always got the feeling insurance companies wouldn't really look fondly on them.
And as to law school, I'm not dead set on teir, but I want to go to school in Boston ideally I'd like to end up at BU or BC, but there's plenty of options

I'm not gonna lie I like the 2009-2013 but the 2006-2008 is my favorite by far.

E30 Wagon

They're solid cars, but a dog of an engine. I prefer them visually and experientially to Audis, but I pretty much have the same requirements and am now looking at B5 A4 Avants.

That specific one is for sale too. I'm not a fan of the modifications, but I speak from experience when I say that E30 Tourings are awesome.

my god, I would do vile things to obtain that car. Shame there's only a few available in the US and far out of my price range

Law school blows, especially if you have to pay for it. Don't go unless it's your only option. -Sincerely, 2008 law school graduate who STILL owes salliemae to the tune of 4x the wagon posted above.

B5 S4 Avant. You can find them cheap and make it into a pseudo-RS4 eventually...

Take your pick, I recommend them all. Mine is the e46 (2001 325xi 5 spd), the WRX is an '06 5-spd, the e30 is a 1991 320i (autotragic), and the Audi is an '03 3.0 6-spd. My friends and I are not an original bunch.

Later years are best, try to shoot for 90-93

I'm really leaning on the bimmers at this point, you say the e46 is yours? How easy was it to find/ were you able to get it for a decent price. And are there any known issues i should be aware of
Also, people keep recommending the e30 wagons, I didn't realize we got so many in the US

yeah I've been told it's a bitch, but it's not quite my only option but I've had my heart set on being a lawyer since high school. Luckily I went to UConn on in state tuition and was smart about living situations, so I'm leaving undergrad with virtually no debt and can use the little bit of money my parents and grandfather have set aside for a college fund to make law school a bit more bearable

awesome thanks! I don't really know where the best places to look are though, do you have any recommendations/ price I should shoot for

They should be under $5k... a lot of them are overpriced cause now people are starting to realize its awesomeness. Try your local craigslist, search eBay and autotrader to see what it looks like inside/out and get an idea of pricing

I got my e46 almost 5 years ago with 118k miles for 9k. It took me 2 months to find, I sold my suburban and daily-drove my 1972 ford f100 in the mean time. That way when one came up, I had the cash ready to make a quick move. Not easy to find, but not that rare. There's an indy shop near me that often has one for sale, they love wagons and love manual wagons even more (concord motorsport in NH). In fact they have a blue '03 325xit and a silver '02 525i (both manual!) currently. For the record, I am not affiliated with them in any way other than as a customer.
The e30's are rare and usually expensive, you're right. But they're old enough that there are more than a few in the US now. My friend bought his on ebay.de and shipped it here, all for under 4k. It was an adventure picking it up sight unseen, but it ran perfect!

Oh as far as known issues on the e46 - look up the e46 section of Bimmerfest.com, they have a wiki too. Basically cooling system stuff, suspension bushings, some other minor engine accessory stuff. Auto transmissions are a potential issue. Nothing catastrophic, but finding one that's been cared for is important.

Yeah idk about that either. Maybe not. Ah okay. My sisters in her final year in San Diego.
