"The good die young." I think these two cars serve as proof of the validity of that statement. Wishful of a return though.

Kinja'd!!!

What was that Miata people? You want a coupe?

Kinja'd!!!

Plus a healthy 260 horsepower from the 2.0T engine.

weren't those things a little on the heavy side? that 2.0t is fucking mean though. and could be factory boosted to 300hp.

One drove just as well at the other but had 100 more horsepower. I'll give you a hit, it isn't the Miata.

A GXP coupe like pictured weighs in over 3000. A little porky for its size/mission, but not a dealbreaker.

When you have that much power pushing you around, a little over 3000 is nothing.

I actualy saw one of these in real life today driving home. It was...not proportionate. It was in a light metallic grey and was a convertible too.

Some people value lower weight as opposed to adding power to compensate. Fans of Lotus, for one. Though I see your point. It doesn't feel heavy when accelerating im sure.

How did it look not proportionate? I always thought they looked better than the Mazda thing.

Facts alone don't tell the whole story. And its a bold claim to say the Sky drives just as well as a Miata without having driven either. An excerpt froma review of the GXP Coupe: Bend this coupe into a corner and it will stick, like much of the competition, providing a sports car experience. But its lack of steering and chassis refinement keeps you from really enjoying yourself. You don't feel as connected to the car and the experience as you might in a Honda S2000 or Mazda Miata.

It just doesn't look good to me. Like others have said, porky. I think the Miata looks a lot better than this, with some aftermarket parts it could look really mean. But as for performance, the Miata definitely loses if stock(notice how I said if stock). But would I ever get one? No, solely because of looks.

I've made enough bold claims about the Miata tonight, do you really think I give a damn? I think the Kappa cars are just as good, if not better than the Miata. Using only facts and not a review from a car magazine.

They managed to put these together using parts from everything from economy cars to a gearbox from trucks, and still make it drive well:

Kinja'd!!!

260 horsepower and torques to counteract the weight

Coupe had well, the structural strength of a coupe

And the kicker: They haven't been made god-status by people who do nothing but fanboy over them.

Miata has its reputation for a reason. You show that sheet proudly, but it just shows why the Kappa twins have the issues they do. The Miata has a transmission renowned along with perhaps a S2000's for being incredibly smooth and direct, with a short throw and positive feel. The Kappa twins transmission feels like unrefined shit, and no wonder, they used the one from the Chevy Colorado. Gimme a break... I can see the positive aspects of the Kappa twins, and would love a chance to drive a Solstice GXP Coupe. You cannot see any positive aspects of the Miata, one of the most well regarded entry level sports cars on the planet. Whos the fanboy?

Kinja'd!!! Logansteno: Bought a VW? > anothermiatafanboy

Kinja'd!!!0

The Miata has it's reputation because it was the only car of it's sort around that was affordable for a good 18 years. No one had anything else in that price range to go to. Then the Kappas came. People had options that didn't look like a cutsie Japanese anime character. They had options that could actually get up and haul ass. If they were still around today, they'd probably be as popular as the Miata.

Did you really expect instant refinement from a car that was built by GM? They like to take their time to get things right. I'm sure they would've eventually gotten the 6-speed manual the CTS used. But they never had the chance.

Your name doesn't really help with your fanboy argument...

Kinja'd!!! anothermiatafanboy > Logansteno: Bought a VW?
05/09/2014 at 00:30

Kinja'd!!!0

Yes, I think refinement is something to be expected of a car. Perhaps if GM didn't make the car 'just good enough' and made it as good as it could have been the cars would have been worth saving when Pontiac tanked. I love how you say 'Then the kappas came' as if the world changed. Yes, they came, but they were dismissed as overweight, unrefined, less fun alternatives to a Miata by enthusiast, and they sold in less than stellar numbers. What is it that you have against the Miata? I am willing to concede there is an appeal to the Kappa twins, why are you sooo anti MX5?

Oh, and the name is meant to be humorous...

Probably because the Miata-is-best puns grate after years and years and years of being over-played. Kind of like the wagons-are-best puns. Or the diesel-is-best puns. All made mostly by people never having actually driven what they are punning about or never having driven something legitimately better than what they are punning about.

Not to say that the Miata isn't a great driver or that the Kappas are; I don't know and I really don't care. Just that sometimes, one really, really wants to tear down that curtain of untouchability surrounding the car. It's fun to wipe smugness away, especially when the smug people are so confident in their superiority because they think you won't do the legwork to prove them wrong.

In the end, the Miata's greatness really stems from its price. For $26,000, you can get an underpowered car that at least has the agility and response of cars three times its price, if nothing else. That's it. That's the game. That's the game, that's the game, that's the game. The end.

I dont get were you're getting they were that overweight! They werent but 500 pounds heavier than the Mazda in roadster form! They werent unrefined, they just werent as refined as a car that had almost 20 year of trial and error under it's belt!

What I have against the Miata is that its an ugly little Japanese roadster thats doing it's best impression of a British sports car! It's underpowered. It's too small. And its driven mainly by old people and hair dressers, dont forget to mention the stance bros!!

I wont argue with this, although I am not campaigning for the Miata having never driven one...I have daily driven an NA for a few years now, through Wisco Winters and all. But I certainly see your point. I am very open minded about cars, I like tons of different stuff, and as I stated before I would love to give a turbo Kappa a drive as well. I just like to play devils advocate when given a good opportunity.

I'm...strange...about cars. I like tons of different things, too, but I really can't stand it when people crow on about "fun to drive slow car fast is more fun than fast car slow" when they probably haven't driven a fast car slow. Not all fast cars are as sterile and soulless precision instruments, and thus there are quite a few that are quite a hoot to drive at any speed.

Thus, I find all this Miata praise undeserved. In fact, I would bet money that a lot of the praise given by the journalists is as much the result of self-conditioning as it is actual road-going prowess.

Well, I bought mine for less than 4k, it has 52,000 miles on the clock, has been a tank in the winter (and drifts on command), I am able to put the top down and feel the breeze, and the car has a connected, involving feel. I do not claim its the greatest car ever or the best handling car ever(and anyone who does is misinformed), but it is hard to beat for the price.

Kinja'd!!! Axial > anothermiatafanboy

Kinja'd!!!0

For $4000 it gets hard, but for the decent-used-Miata price range of between $4000 and $7000, it's not. You've got C4 Corvettes in there, F-bodies, Fox bodies, Fiero GTs, MR2s, and I'm sure I'm missing a few. I obviously have my own opinions, but if it were me I'd rather wait another year to save the extra $1000 to get something like a C4 for $5000 than take the Miata.

Kinja'd!!! anothermiatafanboy > Axial
05/09/2014 at 20:57

Kinja'd!!!0

And that would be a kickass choice. If I got a c4 instead of my Miata winters would be harder, tire changes and gas waaaaaay more expensive, handling less predictable, an interior way too 80's, and a manual transmission without the perfect feel of my Miata. And that is what would stop me. But of course I would gain a lot as well: speed, potential, handling limits (maybe), sound, etc. I understand why not everyone is in love with the Miata, and could totally understand the choice of a C4, but the Miata works for me.
