I'm trying to attach my wheel flares to my Trans Am. My drivers side flare went on no problem. The passenger side one is not going on. Apparently the passenger side fender came off of a 1971 Trans Am and they have minutely different bolt locations for fender flares. Fuck GM. I bought it from a seller who said they came off his 1980 Trans Am. Fuck him. I can't get my flare on because it is now sitting 4 inches lower than it should be. It was painted two days ago so I'm not too excited about drilling into my fresh paint. All I want is for my car to go back together. It shouldn't be a terrible battle with every fucking thing I do on my car. Fuck me.

Pictured is a fender with both sets of holes in it. I need the upper set of holes for my flares to work.

I had to:

make engine mounts

make alternator brackets

make power steering brackets

re-cut and weld my front bumper

make my own rear bumper from steel stock

make my own seat mounts

Cut and push my firewall back

make radiator mounts

Alter an existing TJ rollcage to fit my tub

re-clock my tranfercase

re-clock the axles to allow highway speeds without teeth-chattering vibrations

Fab my own e-brake assembly to a handle mechanism I purchased

plumb my own brake lines (after converting them from drums)

flatten a fucking pitman arm (ridiculous amount of heat for that)

reverse-mount my front shocks

make a battery hold-down tray

cut my fenders for headers (which I had to cut and re-weld into the flanges)

move the gas tank from under the driver's seat to above the rear axle

And more, but it was all worth it in the end. Your car might be a PITA at moments, but nothing is insurmountable. Keep at it with patience and you'll be glad that you did.

Restoring a car requires you to rest on a pretty even keel, man. Take it in stride, figure out how to make things work, and it will be a much better process. Easier said than done, though.

It sucks now but just take a step back, breathe and clear your head. Just keep the end goal in mind and a solution will present itself.

I can't tell you how many times I got mad restoring my camaro and when helping my grandpa on his custom.

Be..... be careful.

Pretty sure that's how it was done at the factory anyways. Fresh painted metal was tapped and drilled and the holes painted to stop rust.

Shit, my trunk wasn't even drilled right (good thing it's the spare)

That fender is like the one I'm having problems with. You might want to check to make sure your flares fit. 1977 and '78 cars had a different style of flares and I'm not sure if they have my style of holes. According to a reproduction panel website there was a panel design change in 1974 and they stayed the same through 81.

I'll have to check.... I only have one flare and I think it's a rear. I assumed the fenders were original since they too were once silver, and painted red with the rest of the car whenever that happened.

Both sides match as far as holes go.

Having done the maintenance, engine replacement and tranny rebuilds on 2 old cars in a high-corrosion environment, (with not much automotive fun inbetween except it spits and spurts), I can only offer this quote:
