So is there any real reason that the wing is attached to the bottom of the car as apposed to lets say, the trunk?
is it connected to the chassis or something?

Yup. If it was connect directly to the trunk the trunk you push down a bit at speed and ruin your aero. A properly mounted wing should be attached to something solid like the chassis.
